Hi All, I've been tasked in leading the upgrading some security features at our Gun Club. As part of this effort, we installed a key card access gate system and extensive fencing to control our outdoor ranges. Now I'm not delusional enough to think that what we've done is foolproof if someone is determined to get past it, but I'd like to help the honest people stay that way. Consequently, i'd like to install a few outdoor cameras ( and maybe some matching dummies) to watch over the gate, access road, parking lot and maybe the back of the building. I'm thinking a 4 camera (8 max) system with a DVR that records in a loop is all we need. Maybe something that only records at motion. In any case we have enough smart people in the club to run the wire but nobody with experience in these systems. Can anyone pass on their experience with DYI installed systems costing in the $300-$2000 range? Any experience appreciated!

p.s.s A search here didn't turn up much useful/ applicable to my needs.

Camera systems are a nice addition to an already well planned security program.

In my experience they rarely lead to catching let alone convicting bad guys. They merely record what happens.

Before I install cameras I would make sure that all entry points are strong enough to be a deterrent.

Make sure all cameras are out of reach and the DVR is secure with limited access.

My advice is to stay away from any inexpensive system they may try to push. Resolution of the camera is your primary concern in my opinion. It does you no good to record a blur. Also check into IP cameras. They're more expensive, but accessible from any internet connection. My other concerns would be lighting and line of sight/visibility of access points.

FWIW I work in the Security Systems Dept. at an Ohio university. We are responsible for access control, cameras, alarms and locks.

If you have specific questions feel free to PM me:)

My advice is don't skimp. Get a quality dvr that is easy to review footage if needed. Also easy to save the footage on some removeable media. I had some video of a bobcat by my house that I wanted to save before it was overwritten. It turned out to be such a PITA, I gave up after 2 hours of trying. Also, get a big hard drive. One terrabyte with 8 cameras would last 4 weeks before it is overwritten I would guess. You don't want to find out about an incident 2 weeks after it happens and not have the video.

After going through this once, I would insist on getting a demo of the cameras and dvr. You are going to need face recognition quality. So many of the cameras look great on youtube but are inadequate when you install them. Good luck

Q-see system is what a friend of mine runs at his shoe store, all you need is to make the initial investment in the cameras and then you need internet! It's pretty great.
