I went with my son the other night to see "Sully", starring Tom Hanks. What a great movie! Easily one of the best I've seen in recent years.

If you thought the "Miracle on the Hudson" was a heroic story, based upon what you heard on the news, wait until you see it on the big screen, and experience what Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles said and did on the flight deck of their stricken Airbus, out of power, and losing altitude and options, as they headed down toward the Hudson River. You cannot help but admire these men --- and the flight attendants in the cabin -- for their coolness and professionalism as they worked together to save the lives of everyone on board.

Now then...although director Clint Eastwood followed the story pretty faithfully from the standpoint of the incident itself, he did take a few liberties with the story in other areas. The real NTSB investigators were not the bureaucratic ogres the movie makes them out to be. And, a friend who is an Air Traffic Controller told me that the set depicting the New York TRACON center was totally inaccurate.

The overall story, however, is intact, and very, very well done...you'll love it! :)

the wife and I saw it the other night, and yes, best I've seen in awhile. The grilling from the NTSB guys was much more traumatic than the water landing. He went thru alot AFTER he set it down. Good movie.

...I hope every plane I fly on has a Captain like Sully in the left seat.

I think a lot of them do. My current job brings me into contact with a lot of airline pilots, and you would be amazed at how many of them are current or former military pilots with a broad range of experience. They are cool, utterly calm, and totally in control at all times.

A personal friend of mine is one such individual. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in the 70s, and flew P-3 Orions when he was on active duty with the Navy. About 15 years ago, while taking off in a 737, a goose went into and destroyed his left engine. Here they were climbing, using full-throttle or close to it, and all of a sudden one engine is gone. My friend told me that he and his First Officer had their arms wrapped around the control column, trying to counteract the yaw from having thrust on only one side of the airplane. They got the airliner to a safe altitude, then dumped enough fuel that they could land safely.

To the extent those guys make above-average incomes, there's a good reason for that! :)

Anxious to see it but will wait for Amazon to have it on the internet. I have a lot of faith in Air Force trained pilots; I'm sure the other services train their pilots well too but I am just more familiar with Air Force trained pilots who went into the airlines. Sullenberger did one heck of a job and made all airline pilots just a little bit better.

Tom Hanks is one heck of an actor. I pretty much enjoy all of his movies. The Green Mile, Castaway, Saving Private Ryan and one whose name escapes me but he plays a mob hit man.

His range of characters is very wide and every role is fantastic. He is entitled to his opinion and until he becomes a politician, I will vote for him. :D

My employers personal pilot supported the view that NTSB was less than reasonable and in some aspects ignorant (such as the shutdown systems on that aircraft when a birdstrike occurs).
I'll let the movie stay in the "more believable than the last airliner crash, fly upside down movie" category.

It's Hollywood and liberties are taken all the time. I've liked Clint in his roles and a bit of his directing, but to me - he messed up fairly well on American Sniper - how many times was Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) on the sat phone with his pregnant wife while on sniper over-watch in a combat zone? This is a big stretch... but I guess it facilitates the story line.

Can't wait to see Sully, I hope they included his line when, after the engines quit, he took the controls back from his co-pilot saying "My Airplane"... leaves chills on my neck thinking of the cool confidence and leadership the real Sully had at that moment....

Road to Perdition. Almost a great movie.

Hanks has starred in several of my favorite movies in the last 20 or 30 years, starting with Big, and including Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, Splash, That thing You Do, The Money Pit, A League of Their Own, Apollo 13, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, and of course his voiceovers in the Toy Story series and The Polar Express. One of the best actors of the last 50 years IMO. If anyone could do justice to Sullenberger's story it would be him.
