Survey:Irons Sights

One of my sports has the Nikon P223. while the other sport has irons. At 100 yds with iron sights, I can't tell if I'm hitting the target until I walk up to it. With the Nikon, I can tell how accurate I am. I like to shoot with no irons since there may be a point you need plain skill with no scope.

Out of my 10 rifles I am half and half. Two of my bolts and my 3 semi autos have scopes. Everything else has Irons or Aperture Sights. I really like my Aperture sights they are more accurate than irons but still are irons and I can change the aperture for the situation.

I runs irons on all my rifles, they can be quite accurate. For my match AR15, I have 1/4" x 1/4" adjustments with two alignment pins to eliminate any kind of movement on the rear sight, I also spung for the micorsight rear sight hood which reduces the problem of having you front sight post looking fuzzy. Shooting at bullseye paper targets out in the open is what this set up works great for, if I had to hit a rodent at the same distances, I think I would be in trouble.

I run irons on my match gun, a red dot on a plain M&P15A home defense and plinking rifle, and a scope on a RRA 6.8SPC hunting rifle. It just depends on the purpose of the rifle.

I am a realist. My rifle has iron sights and I use them regularly, a man needs every advantage he can get in a fire fight so optics are an advantage but what most people forget is that so is having a backup set of sights. Anything can happen to an optic that can render it inop but most iron sights are indestructible.

Irons are fun. I have one AR set up with irons and a Primary Arms red dot and the other is irons only.

Of all my rifles and handguns. I own only one scope and its from my grandmothers .22 rifle; the rifle disappeared after she passed :(

I prefer iron sights for their ruggedness and simplicity. I prefer diopters when I can get them on rifles.

cool I just learned a new term...diopter sight...the correct name for the aperture sights I use!!!thank you

OK. Here's one (talking about sights). You have a red (red/green) dot sight on your weapon. The battery dies. Can you still use the sight with-out the dot and just center the (intended) target and hit with-in reason of what you are shooting at ???

Except for my 15-Sport and 15-22, my firearms utilize iron sights. When I started shooting, did I like irons? Heck no. It was frustrating. I kept on working at it. It became easier and easier for me to shoot irons.

I believe that if you learn to shoot irons well, then any other aiming aid becomes a convenience not a necessity. I have a 3MOA dot on my 15-Sport just to get 1st hand experience with a dot. I have a 1MOA dot on my 15-22 for plain fun. If the optic fails, I can keep on shooting reliably well with my irons.

I do have one aiming aid that I really think is beneficial, especially in the dark. A light/laser combo. Since I started using a light/laser on my primary HD firearm, I understand the synergistic benefits of using the combo.

S&W M&P9fs, Streamlight TLR-4, night sights.

At night I can light up a target. I don't even have to look through the sights. Put laser dot on target, pull trigger. I'm certain to get a center mass hit. I don't have to be in a traditional firing stance to hit the target.

I may try out a laser on my AR.

if you have your irons set up to co-witness you sure can!

you can get reasonably close on a human sized target as long as you have at least your front sight co-witnessed. If you dont have a front sight then it would be hit and miss, try turning it off next time you are at the range and see what happens....Sorry TangoFoxtrot..didnt mean to go a little off subject!!! :(

I can! I have absolute co-witness on my red-dot sight.

No problemo!:D

I'm a realist as well and I really like to hunt! I use open sights only on shotguns, pistols and bows: rifles are meant to have optics IMO...but I'm hunting game not 'perps'.

My MOE M&P 15 has Troy folding sights on it. I'm happy with them but will probably get a 1.5-4 scope someday. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349647148.669302.jpg

I replaced the MBUS rear sight and put a LMT rear sight, on my Magpul MOE. It's a dedicated iron sight rifle and works great.

I just reconfigured my Noveske Skinny MOE into an SPR. I sent it back to Noveske and they had it back to me the same week.....5 day turnaround.
