Is the mag release button/system adjustable?
I have one of these pistols that is giving me a problem. I find that the mag release can be pushed in too far, causing the mag to drag on the "cross pin" of the release. I didn't notice it at first, during range time. But when I started shooting it in competition, I began hitting the mag release with a little more gusto. That is when I noticed that the mags "stick" a little and had to be pulled out of the pistol. Of course when I wasn't under the pressure of competition, the mags fell right out, under the lighter finger pressure of the stress free shooting on the range.

Or should I call S&W, as it is brand new (within 8 months, anyway) and have them look at it? I was hoping to not have to send it in to them if it was a simple fix.

I asked this over in the smithing forum too, but wanted to see if anyone here ever ran into this.

Thanks.

I have never had a problem with mine but I don't shoot competition either.

I just tried mine. No hang ups at all, and I was trying to push as hard as possible.

No adjustment, another mag release might work just fine. If you're handy you could remove it and grind out the area that is rubbing. Coat the mag with some shoe polish and run it in and out to see where the problem is. One other thing may be happening, if there is still a round left in the mag it can be pushed forward in the mag tube and the nose of the bullet is what is actually dragging as the mag comes out.

Smith is sending me a new part! :D
Then I will play around with one of them to see if I can grind/sand it to the point that it will work correctly.

I shoot 1911's from Colt in 45 acp.

I always test mags (I have 70+ in use). If they don't fall free , I trash them. About 10% I buy are discarded, sometimes because they don't drop freely from all my pistols. They're cheap and readily available.

I don't have S&W 1911's but wouldn't imagine a Colt having a problem inherent in the pistol.

I'd be very dissapointed in a 1911 knock off that had such a problem inherent in the pistol. It would make it a non starter for me.

I found that part of the problem is that the Wilson Combat mags that I have (twelve of) are about .003"-.005" thicker at the leading edge, than my Colt, Kimber and Chip McCormick mags are. I cannot toss $350+ of mags. I bought the additional 10 mags before shooting in the PPC match. With no stress of competition, the finger press was obviously less than when "under the gun", during the match. The mag release sticks into the grip/magwell approx. 1/16", maybe a bit less. The fact that the Wilson mags are thicker is half of the problem. The Colt and Kimber mags fall right out, no matter how hard i press on the release. The McCormicks will hang up with a bit more pressure than the Wilsons hang up with.
I switched out the release from the Kimber with the Smith and was able to duplicate the problem in the Kimber. The Smith dropped all mags with the Kimber release installed.
So it is apparently, not the gun.
