Greetings,

I just got my SW22 Victory with the threaded barrel, and shot it yesterday for the first time. I shot it suppressed, and and unsuppressed, and I like everything about it except for one significant issue.

When shooting suppressed, it blows a lot of debris straight back into my face. Of course I was wearing safety glasses, but you almost need a full face shield. The only other 22 pistol I've used with a suppressor is the Ruger 22/45 Lite, and I don't recall anything blowing back in my face. I definitely had issues with hot debris blowing out on my right hand though.

Has anyone else noticed an excess of debris blowing back at them? The rear of the bolt is not closed, so I can see how debris could blow back. It seems like there needs to be a cover across the back of the bolt.

Thanks,
Rusty

What ammo were you useing as that may be the reason why so much blowback?

The only ammo I have shot out of mine suppressed so far is Fed Automatch. I didn't notice excessive blow back during the couple hundred rounds set off. No more so then shooting my S&W compact or walther 1911/22 suppressed.

I bet you were using Rem, there all dirty.

Give that man a gold star, or in this case Remington gold bullet value packs :)

I have a bunch of Gemtech 42 gr subsonic, but I save that for the rifle since pistols stay subsonic with standard ammo. I don't know if that's any cleaner, but I'll try some next time out.

Still, I predict (and hope) that an aftermarket company will quickly produce a cap for the end of the bolt, which will make it easier to grab, and more importantly block the direct path to my face. I only shoot suppressed unless I need to test the pistol unsuppressed for some reason, so I'll be their first customer.

I took it out again today for a couple hundred more rounds, and it's definitely a nice pistol. It makes my unsteady hands and old eyes look good :D

Cheers,
Rusty

Salty you said what I was thinking. I knew if it was Remington its the dirtiest garbage in the market place period. I won't even have that garbage in my ammo boxs as it will dirty them up just from sitting in there.

I shot a bunch of different brand ammo out of my Victory pistols (Suppressed with a Dead Air Mask):

GEMTECH Silencer Subsonic - functioned 100%, quietest of all the ammo

Wolf Performance Ammo Match Extra 40 gr solid (made in Germany, not steel) - GREAT ammo, functioned 100%

CCI Mini Mag Choot Em! 36 gr copper plated HP 1260 fps - really liked these, 100% function

CCI Mini Mag 40 gr copper plated round nose 1235 fps, 100% function (only had a box of these)

Federal AutoMatch - 100% function (I happen to have a bunch of this so I'm glad it functioned OK)

Remington 22 Target 40 gr Standard Velocity solid 1150 fps - only had 4 boxes of this but it functioned 100%

NOW FOR THE BAD (at least for me):
(1) my Victory (suppressed) HATED Aguila SuperExtra Subsonic 40 gr solid point ammo. Just jammed a lot (thankfully my Ruger 10/22 will shoot it OK)
(2) I only shot a few rounds of Remington Golden Bullet (36 gr brass plated lead round nose HP 1280 fps), just to see if they stayed subsonic and in my opinion they did NOT. The first round was quite loud and spit hot "whatever" out the ejection port and burned my hand/finger (I shoot left handed, I can't remember now but I was surprised and actually thought the round exploded or something....in fact I ran a bore snake down the barrel to make sure nothing was in it). Another round tried to chamber and the bullet bent and was loose about to come out of the case, another round jammed)......I will shoot up the few bulk packs I have in my 10/22 rifle (unsuppressed) just to get rid of them. I certainly won't shoot them suppressed nor will I purchase any more.

I really enjoyed shooting the Gemtech and Wolf Match Extra out of my suppressed Victory. I know that I don't need subsonic but the Gemtech was just sooooooo sweet :D

If you shoot something other than Golden Bullets I bet you see a big difference in stuff spraying in your face.....and I think you'll notice that the other rounds are considerably quieter (at least I certainly did).

The only guns i don't get blowback is my bolt rifles. Im lefty trying shooting an AR surpressed left handed. you don't know anything about blowback until you have done that. If you don't want blowback you have to shoot it unsupressed..

Yes, there is blowback with all ammo but some ammo is worse than others (excessive is what the OP was asking about and Golden Bullets are the LAST ammo I'd ever use suppressed).

I shoot left handed ARs because of the blowback. Having the ejection port on the left side certainly helps. I chose "limited brand selection" because of the rifle being left handed over blowback to my face and have never looked back. Choosing left handed ARs has nothing to do with left handed "controls".....for me it was all about blowback (I have had cataract surgery and have advanced glaucoma with laser surgery and my eyes are really sensitive to fumes/blowback).

Thanks for the very complete replies! Funny how many lefties we have here. I shoot pistols left handed, and rifles right handed, probably due to right eye dominance.

Sounds like I should just package the remaining Remington gold bullets with the Ruger 22/45 when I sell it. I don't shoot much .22, so the Gemtech ammo I have will probably last me for years. Aside from probably being too dirty, I don't have any complaints about the Remington though. It's functioned perfectly in everything I've tried it in, and shoots comfortably subsonic in pistols (1012 fps highest I've chronoed).

Cheers,
Rusty

I wonder why my Golden Bullets sounded so loud in the Victory? I guess it may have been subsonic, just louder than the other ammo? Very odd, but since it jammed most of the time I'll just use it up on the 10/22 assuming it works OK with the rifle.

GEMTECH just has me terribly spoiled and I really love Wolf Match Extra and CCI MiniMag Choot Em!

I probably have 22LR ammo to last me a lifetime but my plan is to shoot up all the other stuff and just have the three brands listed above (and maybe AutoMatch since I have so much of that).

I used to shoot a rifle left handed and a pistol right handed. I'm sort of ambidextrous but left eye/leg/hand dominant. But my right side is stronger/more coordinated for gross motor skills than my left so I actually do more things right handed than left handed. Some things I use either hand. I'm not sure how I adjusted my aim shooting my pistols right handed for years but due to joint issues in my right hand I switched to left handed for all shooting (and just practice right handed for emergencies). I don't change anything on my pistols (like ambi safety or switching the mag release) so the fact that the Victory does not allow for those changes didn't bother me at all.

I just LOVE my Victory pistols and sold all of my Ruger 22/45 Lites (didn't think I'd ever do that).

I can't wait to go to the range Saturday so shoot my newest suppressor, the AAC Element 2. After shooting suppressed, that's all I want to do, it's so fun for some reason. I always liked big "booming" gun but wow, suppressed 22 shooting is great.

In the reloading world, people definitely talk about certain powders being quieter than others. I've never had the opportunity to try to prove that though. Given the same ballistics, I think it would have to be a difference in the burn rates.

It's a shame that the sound testing instruments are so expensive for firearm analysis, because I'd love to do some testing.

I shoot almost everything suppressed these days, and most of that is 300 blackout subsonic. It's just so much more enjoyable to me to shoot without hearing protection, and without disturbing anyone else.

Cheers,
Rusty

I've been toying with the idea of getting a 300 blackout upper or an entire new AR15 in 300 blackout...........but then I'll have to research the best suppressors for 300 blackout and stock up on new ammo, etc......hmmmmm. When I shoot my regular ARs suppressed, its because I'm with my BIL who has suppressors for AR15s (I don't own any except rimfire). When I was picking up my Element 2 Monday, I saw some cases of 300 blackout subsonic ammo and tried to ignore it but I may look into that again.

As a follow-up, I ran 100 rounds of the Gemtech through the pistol today, and it functioned perfectly. When I was shooting from a rest, I was probably 10" from the gun, and I did get some blow back, though not as much as I had at arms length with the Remington. At arms length, I felt no blow back with the Gemtech. That makes it easy. I'll just stick with my stash of Gemtech for all 22 shooting now, and sell the remaining Remington with the Ruger 22/45.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,
Rusty

This is good to know...I'm about to pick up a Victory and was wondering how gassy it was.
