I recently painted my MOE grip and after I put it back on i noticed the takedown pin comes all the way out where as it used to slide out but stay in the frame. Does anyone know what caused this?

If it'd got a slot on it's long side, then you just need to rotate it til the retaining plunger goes it to the slot.

There is a spring that holds that retainer in. you failed to put that spring back in when re-installing the grip. There should be 2 springs when you take the grip off

i put both springs back in does the pin need to be in a certain position when putting the spring back in?

you crushed the spring on its side.....take the grip back off and make sure the takedown pin spring seats on the grip straight.....and also be sure the detent is still in the hole.

I forgot, there is also a small brass pin that goes into the bottom of the hole. The spring pushes that pin to hold it in place. If the spring and pin are there, you managed to smash the spring in which it does not give enough pressure on the pin to hold.

I noticed when taking my MOE grip off the other day that the takedown pin spring will not sit correctly unless you make an effort to line it up as the grip goes on. I assume they designed that spring assembly with the A2 grip in mind, the MOE grip has some cutouts there than can cause an issue. It works fine though once you have it installed correctly.

If there is a pin missing that goes in with the takedown spring than im missing it and probably wont find it because its most likely in the carpet I have the one one for the safety selector but dont remember seeing one for the takedown. Anyone know where I could buy one?

It is called a Takedown Pin Detent. It goes under the spring and is what actually contacts the takedown pin. You can order online at your favorite store, but your best bet is a local shop that sells AR stuff. They will most likely have a parts box with the detent you need, they run about $2.

I wonder thought, can someone confirm the 15-22 uses a regular detent? It may use a plastic one for the plastic takedown pin. I didn't remove mine when I had the grip off so I'm not sure on that.

The pin I'm thinking of is the brass one with one end being pointed.

thanks for all the help everyone, last time I take apart my gun over the carpet :(

Both my takedown pins are metal, yours are plastic?

A worthy upgrade is the YHM extended takedown pins.

I found my detent in the carpet! Just used a headlamp and some boredom to crawl around and look for it and after about 5 minutes... whoop there it is!
