I've done a search but haven't found a suggested way to take off the white writing on the slide of my Shield 9mm. It says, "Caution, Capable of firing with magazine removed". Is there a safe way to remove this w/o having to send it in to get done professionally? I thought I'd ask :D

I guess my question is "Why". The bad guys aren't going to be reading your pistol, neither are the targets at the range (or the other shooters). If it really bothered me I'd use a Sharpie but it doesn't so I didn't.

Because I was asking...Some don't mind, others do, I was seeing advice on how, if it was out there...

Sharpie is an option, thank you for that..

Learn to not notice it, that's what I did. Otherwise removal gets expensive. It's laser etched and a real pain to truly remove.

That's what I was wondering. When I add my sights I could have James to some slide work too. That helps me alot..Thank you

I had a shotgun that I once . . . well, never mind. All I can say is that I wish I had had adult supervision like Bkreutz around to tell me what not to do.

x2 most definitely won't do that!! But at least it was a suggestion, not a great one but one at least... :D

Side grinder should do the trick.

Of course not advised unless of course u dont care what ur weapon looks like. But if thats the case, why even remove it. ;)

Try some MEK, Methelethelketone, that's some wicked paint stripper. If that stuff doesn't remove it the only thing I can think of is an acid bath, but then you are going to have to refinish the slide. It is laser etched, but I'm sure that the etching is painted.

"Goof Off", a wooden toothpick, goggles and a lot of patience may also work.

Personally, I spend my time looking down the length of the gun rather than the sides so I don't care if the lettering is white, gold, black or not there. After 10,000+ rounds, I don't even notice what's printed on the side.

I believe the lazer etching "burns" into the medal and the melonite coating just causes it to bleed through. If that is the case it can't be easily removed and would at least have to be sanded out and refinished.

How about cleaning really good with alcohol and a cover-up with a sharpie ??? At least until you find a more more permanent fix.

The message is laser cut, but then it's painted white. Some quality time in front of a good movie with a pointed stick could scrape all that white out of there. Of course a Sharpie would be easier.

I can't think of a quick, cheap, or easy way to totally remove it from the slide...

On a slightly different rant, I've always considered a magazine disconnect as something to avoid in a defensive handgun!!

IMHO, nothing good can come from one. If I accidentally bump the magazine release, I should still be able to use the one round left in the gun... That is unless I have the disconnect to keep me "safe" and transform the handgun into a poorly designed club. Really, the note should read:

"Be thankful we designed this gun to fire with the magazine removed"

Or for those poor souls who have a neutered gun:

"Caution, some idiot made this gun incapable of firing with magazine removed... Good luck with that!"

I used white nail polish to make the lettering on my 9c stand out.

I'll bet you could use the same method with black nail polish to cover up the warning and make it less noticeable.

shieldfan, good question. I have an M&P 22 that is loaded with white print that I'd prefer black. Pet peeve of mine. I don't care for my Rock Island Armory logo on my 1911 either.

See post #16 above.
Nail polish. ;)

Agreed. If I was looking to buy a new gun, I'd look for the variant that doesn't have the "danger Will Robinson" warning, & then get the factory parts to allow the gun to fire w/o the mag. Did that with my 40c. GARY

Just take the pistol to the range, shoot the snot out of it, and forget it. That's what I did with mine. I no longer notice the warning.
