I picked up a Taurus 669 vintage 1993 and was wondering just how close is it to the 589

They are both revolvers and are both chambered for the same round. Beyond that...

The 669 is closer to a K frame, such as the Model 66.

Yep, more similar to a K-frame 19/66, but with a full underlug barrel. The lockwork is very different from that of a K-frame or L-frame S&W.
