I'm interested in third generation S&W, and have narrowed my choice to the 4013. I have seen references to single and double stack versions, TSW, etc. Can someone tell me or direct me to where I can find the differences between the different versions? I would like to know capacities, when each version was produced, things to watch out for, etc.

Welcome to the forum.

The original 4013 had a single stack magazine that held 8 rounds. It was built on the .45 frame which means the gun is a little wider than the 3913 which is the 9mm version. The gun was produced from 1991 - 1995.

Between 1997 and maybe 1999 S&W produced the 4013 Tactical model that had a double stack magazine and held 9 rounds.

After 2000 the model became the Tactical Smith & Wesson and the rail was added and other improvements were made to increase accuracy etc.

I own a 3913 and I carry it every day. I think it is worth while to carry the 9mm version to get the thinner frame. The 4013 would be almost as concealable but I just think that for about the same size I would go with the .45 version. I own the 457 which is from S&W's economy line. It holds 7 rounds in a single stack magazine.

Thanks Bill,

I saw a 3913 at a gun show yesterday for $459 and liked it a lot. I thought the price was maybe $50 high, what do you think?

I currently own a 9mm M&P and a Ruger P944 40 caliber. I carry the P944 and it conceals fairly well despite its size, so I'm not too concerned about the 4013 being a little larger than the 3913. It is still smaller than the P944! I'm not in a big hurry but if I can't find a 4013, I might pick up the 3913.

$459 is a little high for the 3913 unless it had more than 2 mags and was in very nice shape. However, the price on the 3913's seems to be inceasing. I bought a very nice one with two mags at the beginning of the year and I paid $400. At that time I figured I paid a little extra because the condition was so good. New mags cost about $32 and used ones are not that much cheaper in most cases.

Years ago I shot a 4053, DAO version of the 4013, and I was very impressed with the gun.

My only drawback against a 4013 is finding aftermarket grips to replace the slick Xenoy stock ones. The only thing I can find is the Hogue wrap around with finger grooves. To me this adds to much bulk. Grip is about the same as a 6906 which is the same situation as for grip selection. I've even contacted Hogue for ideas. Any one else have any suggestions?

Midwayusa shows two types of soft rubber Hogue grips, monogrips (no finger grooves) Product #: 681029 / Manufacturer #: 16010 and wrap-around with finger grooves, Product #: 333819 / Manufacturer #: 69000. I have the Hogue grips with finger grooves on my P944 and like them. The 3913 I saw at the gunshow yesterday had the monogrips and they were very comfortable.

Don't be mislead by the Hogue 16010's they will not fit a 4013TSW they leave about an 1/8" gap at the rear of the strap. I tried them.

Is there a difference in the grip design between the 4013 and the 4013TSW?

I personally have never handled any of the original 4013's produced between 1991-1995. They have a single stack 8 round magazine. When the Tactical's were introduced in 1997 they had a double stack 9 round magazine, which is what group mine is in, MSE2xxx. Then in 2000 they issued the newer Tacticals with matched slides and frames and other improvements. I measured the width of my frame, front to rear varied a couple of thousandths at .996". If any one has an early issue I would like to know the frame thickness at the grip if possible.

I carried a 4013 TSW for several years and had no complaints once I got used to it. I wish I had it back. I currently own a 4013 as my only serious handgun and I have no complaints about it either. The 4013TSW has a double stack magazine, so the grip is slightly wider and grips for the TSW won't fit properly. The only drawback has already been pointed out and that's the lack of aftermarket grips. I did have a set of Hogue grips with the finger grooves for the TSW and they were fine, but added to the bulk. The only real problem with the factory grips is that if you sweat a lot, and I do, they get slick and get slippery. Might have to try the Hogues without fingergrips one day, but they are strictly luxury to me. For what it's worth....

Overall pretty good gun. But I think I agree with Bill. I used a 4013 single stack for 7 years shooting about 100 rounds a month in training. It was very accurate, occasionally finicky as to which ammo it would cycle reliably. But if a .45 could be had with the same size I would bump up, unless you need a .40 for some reason.

The 4013 (single stack) takes the same grip as the 4516. Its frame was basically an alloy 4516 frame.

This answers why the Hogues 16010 did not fit the 4013TSW. I did some more measuring tonight of frame widths, I should have done slide while I was at it. Interesting measurements:

.45's single stack CS45, 4513TSW, 4566TSW frames .800"
.40's double stack 4013TSW, 4006 frames .996
9mm single stack 3913's frame .745"
9mm double stack 6906's frame .999"

These are all third generations

All good information, thanks for all the input!

I've already got a 9mm, 40, 41 mag, and 44 mag. I don't have anything against a 45 but I really like the 40, already have enough "variety", and would like to stick with a caliber I already have!

Are the 2000 and later improvements substantial enough to hold out until I find one of these? Can anyone tell me how to tell if a gun is one of the later models - markings or serial number ranges to look for? I've done a few internet searches on S&W serial numbers and haven't found anything yet other than calling the factory.

The first 4013 is a single stack 8 round mag and has no markings on the slide. (denver dicks pic)

Then you have mine, (see pics below) As you can see, I have the word Tactical on the slide. It is a double stack 9 round. Then lastly, there is the 40 Tactical (Google image) that is also a 9 round double stack but has blacken decocker and slide release and rail.

One feature of the Tactical (and from what I see by other 3rd gens) is the ability to switch the mag release to the other side, so us lefties can "drop" the mag with our left thumb.
