Thinking about moving to Tn NC or Ga.

We want a nice house with some property around us. A 3 room with a 2+ car garage would do us nicely.

Also we aren't getting any younger so being close to a larger town is important. We just don't want to feel like we're in town.

So, Taxes and other considerations are most welcome. I really don't think guns are gonna be a problem in any of these states.

This Fl boy is willing to give up salt water for peace. Fishing for trout sounds like fun.

Retiring former yuppy baby boomers are buying up all the decent mountain property. It's a sorry state of affairs.

This is true. They're also running up all the land prices. I've been looking towards either central Georgia or out west somewhere.

I live in metro Atlanta, GA

and have a house in the north Georgia mountains, 1.5 hours away. The house in Rabun county is 15-20 miles from both NC & SC, probably 1.5 hours from TN. I like the area, but if you are in need of medical care in a hurry then you are Sure Out of Luck. Franklin, NC has a decent hospital from what I am told, but being a GA resident causes some insurance problems.

Property prices have fallen in the last few years and there is a good number of places on the market. The weather is great, though this summer has been WET. We have had one weekend without rain since April. Sort of makes it difficult to do any work around there.

My wife likes Franklin.

I like anywhere north of Atlanta. I lived there as a kid and loved it north of there.

I'm mostly concerned with the taxes. property, income and purchase.

Income? I have not seen enough people working in that area to determine if there is an average income. I would not suggest moving there without securing a job first, if you need to work. If you prefer self employment, there seems to be a need for "independent pharmaceutical representatives" in the vacinity.

We opted to stay home this weekend but will be in the mountains next weekend. I could pick up some realty magazines if you like, and mail them to you.

Rabun County, Georgia maybe to much excitement for most people... unless you like the sound of the banjo?:D

In the middle of Laural Creek near Warwoman, Rabun County,GA...

Thanks. The magazines come in the mail already.

All kidding aside, I would not recommend NC. I've lived here a while, was born here, moved out and moved back. I planned on living here the rest of my life came back. Last time I checked, NC was the 5th most moved to state and rising. It's getting crowed, it's mostly Yankee's moving in, which means give it 5 to 10 years and it will be a blue state, we all know where that leads.

FYI, everyone from the North is not a Yankee, it's an attitude, not a place you are born in, just as Southern and Redneck are not the same thing.

My plans are to head West in a few years, if I were picking between the three, I'd go to TN. Check out the Eastern Third, stay away from Nashville, it's got crime/gang problem the well heeled there keep from being reported in the news. It's bad for tourism.

TN probably has the lowest taxes and the least intrusive laws. There is no state income tax. NC now has Republican legislature and governor and they are trying to reform the tax structure to make the state more attractive to business. Lots of land around Asheville and medical care is good here. We have a huge VA hospital in addition to Mission Hospital. Hendersonville is not bad either. Employment here is mostly the hospitality industry, but we have some industry here and some breweries starting up. Real estate is starting to come back.

The new Republican majority is a twice a century occurrence and a direct response to the loser we had for Governor and her close ties to D.C., it won't last.

Asheville used to be one of my favorite places, the Asheville area's leading move from State is CA. It's rapidly becoming know as the San Fran of the East. It does have the Biltmore, a first class set of restaurants and bars, great scenery, it's still a nice place, but in my mind it's in that 10 year window to be ruined.

JMO, no offense to Jay.

If you are looking in NC, avoid Boone and West Jefferson as well, check out the Sparta Area, it's only a hour from Andy's old home site and the real Mayberry Influence, Mt. Airy. The Shelton Brothers just opened a top notch winery there, Richard Childress is doing one 45 minutes further down.

I like the Ft. Payne, Ala. area. 30 minutes from Chatanooga, Tenn., less than an hour from Rome. Ga., and a little over an hour from some of the best medical facilities in the country in Birmingham, Ala. Real estate not too pricey up on Lookout Mountain and the area is mostly quiet. I go there several times a year and like it much more than the tourist infested areas of E. Tenn. and W. North Carolina. There's a very large flea market down the road in Collinsville every Saturday and I'd be there every Saturday morning if I could.

First off, do you have a Confederate passport, one that states you were born and raised in the South?

The things you want-near a city, low taxes and good health care, while not impossible, are not always easy to come by.

Check the counties around Roanoke, Virginia. You may find something to your liking.
