I posted before about some guns I bought at my LGS. There were a bunch, over a hundred, from an estate. I'm new to these oldies as I mainly have 70s-80s stuff so need some help. Pre 29, SN S156285, and Pre 10 SN C122259.
The .44 is missing it's Cokes, and it looks like the red ramp was added?
It's got some holster wear and some scratches, but seems mechanically sound.
The .38 has a lot of small scratches but no apparent wear.
Any info or observations gladly accepted.

At this point I've got a lot of questions on these so I'm going to have to sit down with the catalog and a beverage and do some reading.

Sorry about the picture, just an easy phone shot. I'll clean them up and post some more pictures later.
I might just letter these...

Hi

The .38 Military & Police probably shipped in 1950, although the 2" units seem to have experienced less consistent ship dates than the 4" units. Hence, it might have shipped later.

The .44 Magnum is in the serial range of other 4" units. I show S156297 (4") shipping on June 25, 1957; and S156302 (also a 4") shipping on March 8, 1957. Finally, I show 4" units S156351 and S156365 leaving Springfield on January 14, 1957, and January 25, 1957, respectively.

You'll need a letter to know the ship date for sure. I have a 4 inch several thousand SNs "newer" (S161859) than yours and its a first year gun shipping in November of 1956. Of the hundred or so are these the only two you bought? Could you post more pictures of the 44 Magnum?

Yes. A letter is needed since they didn't ship in anything close to serial order.
Here is a sampling of the .44 Magnums that shipped in the first 6 months of availability:
S130706 - the lowest number shipped in that period; June 14, 1956.
S167124 - the highest number shipped in that period; June 21, 1956.
S130927 - the first one completed; shipped February 21, 1956.
S130806 - the first one shipped; December 29, 1955.

I only singled out the units mentioned in my previous post because they were 4" examples with serial numbers close to the OP's. One cannot assume a ship date for a different gun, based on those samples. Even that list illustrates the lack of consistency in ship dates vis a vis serial numbers.

Ok cleaned it up a bit.

Jeff-i also got a nickel 29-2 8-3/8, a Gold Cup, and a nickel Government model. And I'll be eating beans for a while.

Cleaned it up a bit. Grips aren't original.

I'm on a buying hiatus right now, but that beauty of a 44 might tempt me to break my layoff. It's just what I want now, a good solid gun with sufficient wear that I could take it to range or field guilt free. Sah-weeet!
:D
