Terrible Boating Luck & Now Gun Fund Depleted

Nice looking Merc. You gonna keep it on a jackplate? Good job!

I've had a boat since the early 80s, mostly fast bass boats. Got rid of my 200hp 20 footer after my cardiac event at age 64, cashed out my place on Okeechobee and went down to a 90hp 18' aluminum for S Indiana. Liked it fine but Ohio River is too much for it most days.

Decided this spring I was done with boat owning. Sold my rig in 3 days for good money on April 1. Was fine for a couple months but I checked Craigslist regularly. A couple weeks ago a 32 yr old 18' Lund Alaskan showed up on CL and it spoke to me. A bit of a project but the price was right and I'm having fun rigging it.

I've had guns speak to me. Pass one up over bull headedness about $20 or so and then it haunts me. Tom Allman is a southern Indiana gun show promoter and he runs a good show. I was set up with him about 10 years ago and on Sunday about 30 mintes before closing he shows me this Diamondback with a Robar miracle finish. $600 was ask and I passed. Well after I got home I got to wanting that d-back so Mon am I called Tom. He lives about 75 miles north. He had the gun and was breaking beans when I called him. He drove S and I drove N and we met in the middle. Some say it's a sickness. . .

this is the d-back and I've still got it. :)

Yep the 9.9 is mounted to an aluminum small boat jack plate... long shaft Merc will be jack plated too..... good eye!!

Forgot to mention it has power trim/tilt.... this is gonna be a huge step up in outboard hp and performance.

Ran a Mercury XR2 thru the 80's & 90's.... spent more keeping it running than boat and motor cost new. Swore I'd never run a black one on a boat again. Fingers crossed, hope they've gotten better.

What's another old saying?
The two happiest days in a boat owners life? The day he buys the boat and the day he sells the boat.

Yep. That's what I told my brother-in-law when he bought a boat. At the time he scoffed at me, but within 2 years he came to the realization I was right. His boat spent more time on land undergoing various repairs than it did on water.

Another definition-- Bring Out Another Thousand.

These days you have to count the expensive fishing tackle too.
Complaining about the $100 price tag on Fate Black fishing rods(have 5), a friend points out the gloomis rod rack....$600 per rod. Head shake.....nope ain't gonna happen.

The latest greatest bait on fire at Lake Guntersville is a soft plastic bream looking crankbait about the size of your palm....$50 each. NOPE!!

The thing about a boat being a hole you throw money in is not always true. I bought a 10 year old 19' Four Winns ski boat with V6 engine and sold it seven years later for about $600 less than I paid for it. Seven years of family fun and entertainment for 600 bucks is not bad and I would like to buy another one but can't find a nice one near the price range of that last boat.

I was always told " Mercury if you want to get there first, Johnson if you want to get back"
It may have been true years ago. I hope, since I now have a Merc

I always had faith in the Johson/Evinrudes. Heck I used a 57? 6 HP Evinrude that my father had. It was in the outbuilding frozen up in the late 70s. A little bit of ATF clean the carb and new plug Ran fine. I used it till the early 90s when I sold it to a fellow. He used it till 2004. Don't know what happened to it after that. I ran all my O/Bs in fresh water to clean 'em out after running them in salt water. Never had any trouble except with one small Chrysler O/B. I did burn up one Palmer I/B hit and miss cause I "forgot" to pour some cooling water in it. A really slow boat for an 11 year old kid

It's a done deal....1 week to find, travel 5 hours round trip and installation. Not bad at all.... well pleased.

Test run tomorrow :)
