Texas House Passes Constitutional Carry Bill – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – After nearly seven hours of debate, the Texas House has passed a Constitutional Carry bill by a vote of 84-56.

During the discussion Thursday, April 15, the lead author, Representative Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler. said under House Bill 1927, law-abiding Texans 21 and older would no longer need a license or permit to carry a handgun in public. “It’s time for Texas to join the 21 other states and pass common sense Constitutional Carry.”

More of the story at the link. The usual suspects utter the usual hysterical warnings. None of which have taken place in any of the twenty other states that have adopted some form of permitless carry.

It doesn't seem all that long ago that only VT and AK allowed permitless carry and soon we might be at almost half the states having some form of it.

Progress.

Texas is surprisingly bureaucratic and slow despite it's reputation. My daughter is a social worker there and they dragged their feet for months approving her license. First the claimed that she sent the wrong paperwork. Then that she sent incomplete paperwork. Then, it was in line to be reviewed, but it would take months. Then they lost the paperwork.

She called her state Senator and asked for help. As it happened, he was on the committee that approves funding for the department which controls that.

Suddenly, they found her paperwork and like that, it was approved.

I like the Texas approach to keeping state bureaucracy to a limit, but it seems that they are not able to keep up with the ever growing population.

But I digress.

We could be next, although it pains me to say this has been an embarrassingly slow process that should not need to be done in the first place.

I’m bout ready to slap the next person i hear bragging about how gun friendly texas is. The people may be, but gummint AINT.

Although I had no issues per se with my LTC paperwork, I completely agree with your observations.

I plan to keep up with my LTC renewals, but it does bother me greatly that Texas was not ahead of the trend on this years ago. Our sense of rugged individualism isn’t there the way it used to be. It’s a symptom of other things that I’d rather not discuss here because they are political.

I've had a LTC in MA since about 1976 or so. MA has a reputation for being hard to get licenses in, but that varies widely from town to town or city to city.

It always found it surprising that I could legally carry in MA, but no one could legally carry in TX.

I'm not a big fan of open carry, but I am a big fan of people who want to having the option.

Potentially good news for Texas, sadly, won't happen here in the Communistwealth of Virginia.

I want to neither drift my own thread nor insult your state, but on our trip down and back to SC last month, we found the most ridiculous restrictions were in VA. Made MA look downright reasonable in comparison. Although it's not reasonable at all.

There is a lot of politics afoot, but I understand that permitless carry has a good chance this time in Texas. Now is the time to please let your state senator know your mind on this issue. God bless all here.

One big problem here as I see it is "Special Interest" groups can exert way too much influence. Combined with the fact that the legislature is only in session every other year. Put those two together and things move at a glacial pace.

There's all sorts of laws and regulations that restrict trade and stifle competition. It's nowhere near as "free and open" as most think. We usually get there, but while we're not the last to move in a given direction, we are also never the first.

For a lot of folks, their ideology overrides facts.

I've been watching CHL/LTC (OC)/Const Carry progress over the last 12 Yrs and there was method to the system. Texas has used the 'Baby Steps' / stepping stone method. The LTC Bill finally passed as a 'Compromise' to the Right to Carry bills also being submitted. Back then the 'usual suspects' cried the old "There will be blood in the streets" argument about Open Carry.

Now that we've proven that wrong, along with Obama and Biden wanting to ban everything, this may be just the chance Texas needs to finally get Constitutional Carry passed.
Obama and Biden have actually been the Best Salesmen the Gun Retailers and 2A legislators could ask for. ;)

BUT... we need not forget that Every Session, the same Dems draft the same Bills to restrict/revert/abolish CHL/LTC. While they have never gotten out of committee, it gave the Dems a chance to say "Hey, we tried... Maybe next Year". Also, more and more of the Metro areas are giving their seats to the Dems and if we're not careful, our 2A rights COULD disappear.

I know this view is unpopular, but just know that so-called Constitutional Carry means EVERYONE can carry - inner city thugs without felony arrests, crazies with no court-ordered commitment, angry ex-boyfriend/girlfriends without restraining orders, addicts without felonies (and there are LOTS of Vicodin freaks who are indistinguishable from the straight and sober), people who believe what they see about guns on TV, movies, or in video games, and those who are really, really scared and think a gun is a magic wand that will always keep them from harm.

Here's where it gets confusing for me... Here in Tennessee there currently is a law that we can conceal carry inside bars and saloons..The kicker is that you cannot drink alcohol while in the bar...I'm trying to remember when the last time I went to a bar and didn't drink?.. Now effective July 1st we can carry without a license if we re over 21 etc. Believe there are some restrictions about places that prohibit weapons. Going to a gun class this week hopefully they will answer questions.

What this basically boils down to...
Your Designated Driver is allowed to carry.

When was the last time thugs, crazies, or addicts worried about what was legal?
