That's Not a Knife!

From the first link in the OP:

As Davis recounted in his 1998 book, Shadows in the Sun, the Inuit man's family had taken away his tools in a vain attempt to persuade him to leave the ice and join them in a settlement. Undeterred, the man "stepped out of the igloo, defecated, and honed the feces into a frozen blade, which he sharpened with a spray of saliva," Davis wrote. "With the knife he killed a dog. Using its rib cage as a sled and its hide to harness another dog, he disappeared into the darkness."

Now that's what I call a tall tale!:D

The sad part about this was the money, time and effort used in this so-called "research".

Money, time and effort that could be used in finding cures for the various afflictions mankind has, developing renewable energy supplies, and so on.

I can't help but wonder if these kinds of "projects" are just a (very pathetic) excuse to skim off the till and lone more than a few pockets.

Forgive my cynicism....

Re outlandish scientific grants, my favorite, which I read about years ago, was a team of scientists who convinced someone to give them a grant to strap glasses on chickens that made the chickens see everything upside down in order to see how it affected the chickens behavior.

I imagine a group of scientists sitting around smoking dope or drinking and coming up with zany ideas to propose for grant applications.

"Hey, man! I got one!"

A somewhat practical use for this (messily) applied science would be for deep space or planetary exploration.

Humans tend to produce the stuff on a regular schedule, so ANY useful secondary purpose would benefit a long-term mission.

The Martian would have been a different book and movie entirely…

Yea, you are right. I'll probably never use it.

BTW, how's every think in Metamora? All my in-laws are shivering.

21 degrees at the moment. More snow maybe in the next few days although we really haven't had much this winter. Just enough to be a nuisance. So where abouts are your in-laws.
