The A-10 lives!

Speaking of the sound of it and its guns, it is THE hummer.

Best money the USAF spent in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Those are tough birds with an incredible main armament (the GAU-8 Avenger is one heck of a weapon).

Spent a winter in the desert southeast of Tucson AZ 2 years ago. I saw those coming and going from the gunnery range almost every day.

When they approach they hug the terrain and are almost silent. If you happen to be the target your numbers up.

Fine old aircraft.

Well now--That really puts in proper perspective. One bad mother right there. When it has to be removed,,,,send in the A-10.

Thank you,

I saw a live-fire demonstration of the Avenger Gatling gun at Eglin AFB, where they do some ammunition acceptance testing for the 30mm and 27mm shells. They did two 36-round bursts for us. The first burst, we were standing behind a blast door looking past the gun and downrange. The noise, blast, concussion, etc. from ten feet away takes your breath away and you feel it in every cavity of your body. The second burst, we were mid-range, the gun to our left and the target/sand pile to our right. Let me tell you, I would NOT want to be on the receiving end of that thing.

Absolutely ridiculous.....

The F-35 is a 'bit' too expensive to cover many ground attack roles. And how many are they going to have?

The A-10 has done the job. The A-10 was designed for BIG ground attack and I heard that the marines (?) were looking for a light ground attack plane.

Answer - Make a mini A-10 with a smaller, conventional Gatling gun.

I've seen some of the proposals for the light attack plane. Nearly any enemy we've confronted has more sophisticated weaponry that is able to be deployed in air defense and a conventional plane is just too vulnerable. Needs armor and redundancy. Not a converted civilian plane.

Seeing it attack groups of personnel....

Putting it simply, they become part of the landscape. Just plowed under.

Thank you,

One Summer back in the day, I was at the gunnery range for training and they had old main battle tank hulks scattered around the area. Asked about them and the instructor said - "Wait for it.":) About 2 minutes later an A-10 rolled in for a run, a burp, and the main battle tank looked like it had been cut with a knife. Amazing to watch. When they were first retired with no meaningful replacement I knew it was moronic, glad they're back.

Since the 70's and still serving! Impressive devastation & enemy damage Hogs can deal out.

Saw more than a few shooting targets on the target range, back in my service days. Got too watch them from the range tower a few times BRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTT is right. Some weapon systems are just so well designed they keep on going, A-10, F-15 even, 1911 45....
