The Case of the Missing Knife

Inanimate things do seem to grow legs at times! Oh about thirty years ago my old Gerber "boot" knife just disappeared, looked all about with no luck. Well, when I moved back to my home town twelve years ago and whilst getting rid of all those things you don't need I came across some of those basket weave baskets with about three nested together and there it was in one of the baskets. How it got there I'll never know but methinks the little lady had a hand in the whole thing, but of course I did not bring it up with her!

I got in the habit of carrying small, light , single blade knife. Most
of the time I'm carrying tool pouch with cable knife & utility knife,
so I don't need a big knife. Thing is if I carry a cheap little knife
and lose it, it always turns up. If I carry a good one, it's never to
be seen again. So I've been splitting the difference and using a
Case, single blade, Lite, costs about $20. Good knife and if you
loose one you won't cry.

I have a Victorinox Pioneer that I bought in 1995 that is my EDC knife. I become temporary separated from this knife probably twice a year, sometimes for up to a month. So far the knife has always managed to find me again. Sometimes I think the knife is angry because I picked up a different SAK I take on vacations and weekends with the wife. The other SAK has a cork screw and ink pen, which comes in handy. Maybe the Pioneer is female and gets jealous that I take a different knife out on the weekends.

My BAD! I thought this was a thread about a missing Case Knife? A real Knife?

I have a Case, a medium stockman pattern in reddish brown jigged bone scales. But if I carry it, I always need some tool that I'd have had if I'd taken a Victorinox.

I recently took a pre-Christmas to a buddy's house to see him, his wife and my God-daughter and drop off some gifts. I had my Kershaw Brawler on me, in my pocket the entire trip.
Two days after I got back home, I still could not find the knife. I started looking in all my pockets, the bag and bathroom case I had, but had no luck finding it. I started to tear my truck apart, but still no luck. By now I figured I had left it at my buddy's house, as it was starting to become a tradition of me always leaving something. As his wife puts it, "a reason to come back". So I again settled for one of my backup knives to occupy the pocket.
After a call from a co-worker speculating on a potential business trip, I decided to take inventory of my my bathroom case, and low and behold, sitting in the side pocket is my Kershaw. How it ended up in the side pocket, I'll never know. How I didn't feel it when I checked the bag the fist time, I don't know either.
Glad it's back though! I had seriously considered ordering another Kershaw.

I carry the smallest Swiss Army, the 1-1/4 inch one with the 1 inch blade. Smallest knife I could find that will keep a good edge. Thought I lost it. Flew to Denver, then getting on the plane to fly back home, checking in, going though TSA, one of the checkers runs up to me, holding it between two of his fingers with a scowl on his face. Surprised and embarrassed, I asked where he found it. "In your jacket." It had fallen into the lining through a tiny hole in a pocket.

I thought I never carried it in a jacket pocket.

It went into their prohibited/trophy bucket.

The screeners at my home airport had missed it.

$14.95 at my LGS.

I bought several used SAK's out of buckets of knives seized at airports and court houses. I paid $3 for the little Classics like you described and about $5-$7 or a little more for larger sizes. Both Victorinox and Wenger knives were in those buckets. But only SAK's. I guess someone sorted out other brands and types. I bought several styles, from Classics to a SwissChamp.

Some needed scratches polished off by hand with Simichrome, and I still need to finish polishing a couple. May see what Swiss Army Brands would charge to refinish the blades and maybe buff one or two handles or replace them. The scales snap on and off and they have replacements. And I need a tweezer or two.

But I was able to handpick knives that were all in quite good shape. I feel a little bad about it, because the knives probably meant quite a bit to some of those who had to give them up. One was from the USAF Academy, a couple others from other universities. And there are a few with advertising logos.

I have a couple of my favorite Spartan models that look as good as new ones do after being carried in a pocket for a few months. The only wear is that the bright shine on the handles has dulled a little.

These are the greatest knife values I've seen. And the seller said that interest in them was low and it took him a long time to sell many. I was into those buckets like the proverbial kid in a candy store. I love SAK's! :)

BTW, several members have made posts about carrying other things in the pocket with their knives. Don't carry anything in your pocket but the knife and handkerchief. That avoids unsightly scratches.
Other items go in the other trousers pocket.

The big gun show at Dallas Market Hall. I don't know where the man bought them from the agencies confiscating them.

He had about five big buckets of them and it took several shows to sell most.

My ferret used to climb up the back side of my dresser and steal my pocket watch.

I usually found it on the bottom of the sock drawer
