Does anybody know anything about 'The Darkest Hour' movie with Gary Oldman as Churchill? Rotten 'maters gives it 85% Fresh but I don't trust the general population to appreciate a movie like this. If anybody goes to see or has seen it, let us know what you think.

Waiting on it here, with anticipation.
The trailer showing Oldman as Churchill is an amazing transformation.

Do the English pronounce Churchill as "Shurchill" the same way they pronounce the chassis of a car, as "schassie" ? :D

I was told the grammatical rule for their chassis pronunciation once, (by a transplanted Irishman for goodness sake),but the rule would have us pronounce school as "schuule", and about four other words that would have you get laughed out of the local American tavern. :D

Rush gave it a must see earlier this week.
Wife won a gift cert. for the movies. This may be a good one to see.
Last was Dunkirk.

When "Star Wars" settles down, there should be room to show it at the 18 plex. They had 16 screens for Star Wars and 2 screens for kids and Christmas movies a week ago yesterday! I will catch a matinee when I can find it.

The reviews I read all gave it vary high marks, especially Gary Oldman's portrayal of Churchill. I'll definitely see it when it shows up at Redbox. Maybe I'll pair it up with Dunkirk. I don't do inside theaters very often, maybe once a decade.

For Churchill fans, John Lithgow's superb performance as Winston Churchill in the first season of the Netflix series "The Crown" is not to be missed. In fact, both seasons now running are extremely well done and I highly recommend them. Netflix seems to be outperforming the major studios in the overall high quality, both technically and artistically, of their series productions.

A movie about a man that drank a quart of gin, smoked up to 20 cigars a day and lived to see 90.

That's a must see. Maybe watching this will help me figure out how to do it.

...and did not trust bodyguards to protect him so he carried a .45 Govt. Model during the war.

Well, if YOUR bodyguard looked like his and insisted on carrying a .32 Webley auto, you'd probably wear a .45, too! :D

Churchill bought that .45 in 1915 and you can see the outline of it under his white suit in a well known photo of him in North Africa or at Yalta.

BTW, in 1950, Colt presented him with their new Commander .45.

He owned at least 5-6 handguns, which were profiled in, Man at Arms some years ago, before the horrible gun control act of 1997. I think these guns are now in museums But his family was able to retain flintlock pistols belonging to their famed ancestor, John Churchill. Sir Winston was born at John's place, Blenheim Palace. Look it up. Nice pad, but I'd hate to have the electric bill or cut the grass on that huge estate. It makes most homes in Beverly Hills look like slums.

Saw it today.

Enjoyed it very much.

Oldman's performance is terrific.

Before seeing it, I heard it discussed on the radio. They likened it to the way in which Daniel Day Lewis turned Lincoln in to a real flesh and blood person, not just a statue with dialogue. I think that's a great way to describe it.

Spoiler Alert
Allies invade France June 1944 and kick butt

Oh man!!!

The movie takes place within about a three week period in May of 1940, so we never got that far.

This is the worst thing since my buddy spoiled the ending of the Patriot! ;):D

It was especially cool to see scenes in the cabinet war rooms, which we've visited. The real ones are, in a display choice I don't think we'd make today in the U.S., populated with mannequins. It kind of took me out of the authenticity of the place. The film uses the space to much better effect.

I live very close to Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio. I have no idea why it was named after him, as I never heard of any San Antonio connections to Sir Winston and I doubt he ever even visited here to see the Alamo. There are probably not too many other schools in the US named for him. There is a large Union Jack flag painted on the side.

I certainly hope its better than Dunkirk.

What was so "bad" about Dunkirk?? This one cannot be compared to the one with John Mills in any way, shape or form-or it will certainly will be ""lousy"" in comparison. Anyway, the new one was well made, well acted-I recognized only one man's name who acted in it-the one who was the RN evac coordinator who stayed behind. He was in Titanic-as the officer who shot a passenger-then later committed suicide.

He spent a year...

He spent a year on a cattle drive in 1946.:D

Saw it over Christmas weekend. Awesome movie. If Oldman doesn't get the Oscar for best actor I will be disappointed. He did a fantastic job. Knowing Hollywood, they will probably give it to some rapper just because.

If you are a war buff or just a history buff then this is a must see.
