All.
Browsing the internet and saw an ad for a Judge in 28 gauge. It looked big. Did not read to much of spec's. I have a low opinion of the Judge concept and I am not sure that 28 gauge makes it any better.
Just played with a weight conversion table. The standard 28 gauge load is 3/4 oz. That is 328 grain load. Might have a bit of recoil.
Opinions?

Will it fire metallic cartridges? Who makes .55 caliber rounds? Seems like another solution looking for a problem.

All.
I have shot Skeet and Sporting Clays, and hunted ARIZONA quail with various 28 gauge pumps, autos, and over/unders thru the years. The 28 gauge is a great shotgun round. The guns made specifically for 28 gauge are light and comfortable to use. They also have 26-28 inch barrels and weigh 6-7 pounds.
I think a handgun with that shell is going to be difficult to enjoy shooting. The recoil energy from a 3/4 oz or 328 grain load doing 1200 feet per second is at, near, or beyond .44 Magnum specs. I assume they will make special self defence loads, but a real 28 gauge with # 6 or #7 1/2 birdshot would be very effective at pistol ranges. Heavier shot extends that range.
I think I will keep my .44's and .45's.

You buy one big boy and I'll drive up there with the shells and watch you shoot it!! :D

Of course that's just a hollow threat. There's no way he would survive a trip that far nawth. For him, its near the arctic circle.

Better still about the gun, Judge owners are discovering the ammo shortage isn't over. And when they can find ammo, they discover that .410 ammo costs as much or more than 12 gauge. Wait till they see the price on factory 28 gauge! :)

I think maybe 20 gauge would be the way to go.

That way you can have a revolver in 20 gauge shot and .600 nitro!

It might look something like this....

I saw one of the Raging Judge Magnums today....454 Casull/.410, 3".

It was a chunk.

I'm holding out for the 10 gauge....
;)

I'm going to wait for the 4 gauge.

Or you can get S&W version of the Judge, with Hogue K/L frame compact grips.
First they copy Ruger, now ............ Taurus.
Didn't it used to be the other way around ?

How does this not violate the larger than .50 handgun regulations? Shouldn't this be an AOW?

Had this same discussion at the local gunstore today.
One option is smooth bore.
Another option is to choke the muzzle to .499.

Yup, holdin' out for the upcoming Taurus, "The Whole Judicial System" revolving punt gun. I'll be the Dirty Harry of duck poachers.

It's actually the rifled barrel that keeps it from being an AOW. Any smoothbore pistol is automatically an AOW. Anyway, all they need is a sporting purposes exemption from the ATF, the same as routinely given for big game rifles.

I dislike snakes, and though I don't trust Taurus' QC, I'd likely purchase one of these things.

Given the weight I've read, recoil shouldn't be much of an issue, probably less than an N frame with magnum loads.

As soon as someone offers 28 gauge slugs, it ought be truly interesting. That's a big hunk of lead.
