In the late 70’s my brother and my best friend applied for and received Pronghorn Antelope tags for Northeastern California. Back then CDFG made public the names of successful tag holders and the Manson Family got hold of them. They called and threatened to murder the hunters. They called my father’s uncle and he was very helpful and told them they were mistaken and were really looking for his nephew, my father. So they called my father and threatened him. My brother was living with our parents at the time while he got back on his feet following a nasty divorce. After that when he answered a knock at the door he had his trusty Ruger Backhawk .45 with him. I do not remember who it was that made the threat but they were caught and brought to trial and my brother, father, his uncle, and best friend were called as witnesses. She was convicted. My brother and friend did each kill a nice Pronghorn that year.

The Manson family did this from inside prison? Probably after ten years behind bars they rated some furlough or visitation rights.

Well, your family certainly wasn't very friendly. Your Dad and brother should have gotten a few friends together and invited those folks over for a big antelope dinner. :D

They were certainly a strange crowd, and dangerous, too.

I think this occurred in 1976 and not all of his followers were in prison at that time. I will be duck hunting with my friend in a week and I will ask him about this then.

Wow' what a story EQGuy*
I was only in the 5th' grade back in the summer of 69'
but I remember it well, we were living in Torrance Calif.
at the time when the Manson gang was on the loose after
the Tate' - Labianca' murders, .. first time I remember having
to make sure the doors were locked when goin to bed.
Me & Dad went to the local Army Surplus store & picked up a
30' M1 carbine (first gun I ever shot)
.. I still get chills listening to Riders on the Storm" (Doors)

There's a killer on the road"
His brain is squirming like a toad"
If you give this man a ride' sweet familly will die"

Remember, Squeaky Lynette Fromme did make an attempt on Gerald Ford's life after the Tate-Labianca killers were imprisoned.

With an unloaded revolver, if I remember correctly. No one ever accused Manson or any of his followers of being geniuses.

It was a 1911 with four in the magazine and an empty chamber. Correct, No geniuses in that group.

Regards.

Bob

Correct. It was loaded and she pulled the trigger at point blank range. But, thankfully, had not racked a round into the chamber. It is the only thing that saved the President's life (and likely those of a few around him as she had four rounds).

Our neighbor's sister and her husband had to raise their granddaughter after the clan murdered the girl's parents when she was a baby.

I had business at the DA`s office quite awhile after they were arrested. There was a few manson family girls protesting. I noticed they had swasticas carved on their foreheads. So evidently as said, they all werent in jail.

The really scary thing is there are lots of Masonite’s out there, just waiting for the right signal or what they believe is the right time to act.

Hopefully another Ted Bundy will never be brought into this world.

Why?

I'm having trouble following "they decided to murder the pronghorn hunters".

I realize that Manson is crazy, but still - why?

I have read manson controled his followers with scientology methods. I can belive it as I have been around it as my sister and BIL were in it from the time it started. Right after the murders a aquaintance in my flying club had a couple of guys that wanted to fly over the spahn ranch where they had holed up to take pictures. We flew them around it. I guess they might have took them for some magazine or newspaper.

As far as why did they threaten the hunters, I am guessing mansons followers were hippy, druggies, drop out peacenic types. Things go hand in hand and the type usualy is/were hug a tree animal rights type, war protesters too.

I will say that I am recalling this incident from second hand information as I was not there but this is a story I was told. I will pick my friends brain next week while in the duck blind. Even though they were called as witnesses for the prosecution they did not have to testify. There was enough evidence to convict before they had to speak. One of the witnesses was a hunter who showed up wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots who stated something along the line of I hunt because I enjoy hunting and I enjoy eating wild animals. The defendant then went nuts and started screaming at him and had to be restrained and removed from the court room. I thought that the defendant was Squeaky Fromne but I think she was already in prison at that time. Like I say I will be hunting with my buddy next Saturday and will pick his brain as he was there.

I could, kinda, understand the "respect for all living things, which means we have to kill the evil hunters". If they went out in the woods and killed everyone in camo or hunter orange. It was the "list of pronghorn hunters" that threw me. Why just them? Like, maybe, was it a special hunt that was going to take place on ground "sacred to St. Charlie". or something like that.

Back then I believe this was the only special hunt that California had a drawing for. Now we have drawings for Antelope Sheep and Elk as well as special deer hunts so I suppose it was the fact that they had a list of names to go by.
