I remember that many of y'all enjoy Michael Connelly's writing. I have just made a delightful discovery. Evidently He has a new character. Her name is Renee Ballard and she is a Detective with the LAPD. To describe her in one word she is "driven". But you could also use adjectives like, smart, tough, and even caring and be spot on.

The name of this book which was published 2017 is THE LATE SHOW. You know how good he is with titles; Angel Flight, Trunk Music, Concrete Blond, etc, Well you will find that THE LATE SHOW is no less inspired.

I know that you may have already made this discovery. It takes me a while to get around to some things but I do what I can. Anyway just on the off chance you haven't found this yet I wanted to give y'all a heads up. This is vintage Connelly. Great story, smoothly written with interesting characters and great plot development. Just now I can't think of another of his books that I've enjoyed more.

I finished it at 0230 this morning. The last 150 pages will hold you like a vice. Try to remember to breath. I find that it is real "page burner". I expect y'all will agree. I swear I think he could write a telephone directory and make it interesting.

I'm gonna stick my neck out and predict that Detective Renee Ballard will be as big a hit with Connelly fans as Bosh, possibly even bigger. If you were a crook or a killer she is the absolute LAST cop you would want on your case. She'll go anywhere, do anything and rules are optional.

Okay I gotta quit now 'fore this turns into a spoiler...

It is available in large print if you need that.

Haven't gotten around to The Late Show yet, but did recently finish the latest in the Harry Bosch series, Two Kinds of Truth.

Michael Connelly's creativity and skill at character development seems to know no boundaries. Also, unlike other modern crime fiction writers (Robert Crais, for instance) Connelly's characters and plots seem reality-based and entirely within the realm of possibility. I'm pretty sure this is because of his years as a crime and judicial system reporter, most recently with the Los Angeles Times.

Connelly's literary hero, by the way, is Raymond Chandler...and it shows in his writing.

Excellent post! All his word skills combined with his deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the LAPD and usage of all the cop talk really put you in the action. He knows how people talk and his dialog is REAL. I am eagerly awaiting his next Renee Ballard book!

I've never read a Connolly book. My main crime author today is John Sandford. I'll try Connolly.

My overall favorite crime author was David Lindsey. At his best, he was elegant and plausible. Used Houston well as a setting, too. He seems to have retired, but think his site is still up and you can read excerpts there.

The Late Show is a great read. I gave it to my niece who aspires to be an FBI agent.

For you Michael Connelly fans who haven’t seen it yet, check out Bosch on Amazon Prime. Very good series based on the Harry Bosch books.

Wife and I love his books. Re-watching the Bosch series on Prime. New season coming out in Feb I believe. For the most part, the TV show follows the story line in his books.

Have seen The Late Show on the bookshop shelves but didn’t buy myself a copy for Christmas. With the new Dan Brown book Origion, plus a new Clive Custler Fargo series and the newest Jack Reacher I had enough reading material for a little while.

But it is on m6 list for when I need more.

Well, IMOH those are all very good books but none of them is a patch compared to this new Connelly book...

You might be familiar with his movies; "Blood Works" and "The Lincoln Lawyer".
His novel "Blood Works" was about 70% the same as the movie.
I think booth movies were well done, and he refers to the movies in some of his books.
I hope to see more of the books made into movies.

Best,
Rick

Also a Connelly enthusiast ... Among many of the others posted in this thread, I do enjoy Sanford, as well. Never was much of a Matthew McConaughey fan until I watched the "True Detective" mini-series. Then I looked at Lincoln Lawyer (really enjoyed the whole package - actors, music, story, etc). That, of course, led me to reading Connelly's novella. And from there, the logical step to the Harry Bosch series. I'm now reading "Two Kinds of Truth" and will be getting "The Late Show" next - looking forward to it! This is a genre that I particularly enjoy and I think Connelly is at the top of the heap as far as its writers are concerned.

I discovered Michael Connelly over the summer and have read every book except “Bloodwork”, which I spoiled by watching the movie.

“Late Show” was good. I guess it’s time to retire Harry Bosch and start a new generation.

Anybody know anything good & similar to Connolly? Definitely not Patterson.

Probably not! The storyline about Terry McCaleb is the same, but the ending is totally different. And the gun is different, a semiauto. I hope this doesn't constitute a spoiler! There is at least one other sequel involving McCaleb.
My problem with Connelly's books is the price. $15. for the new ones on Kindle. I can see the movie for about 2 bucks.

Best,
Rick
