I have posted earlier regarding my acquisition of rimfire handguns and rifles.

Last week I had the opportunity to participate in a precision rimfire rifle match.

I used the only scoped rifle I had, a Ruger 10-22. Ranges were from 50 to 300 yards. From a scoring perspective I did not do well at all, but I had a ball, learned a bunch, gained new respect for the capabilities of the 22 LR cartridge and have begun the process of gathering the equipment in order to improve my performance.

I made a new friend and he was wanting to upgrade his equipment and I bought his old rig consisting of:

A Savage Mark II, with a Nikon Prostaff 3X9 scope, a CVlife bipod, and case. He wanted $300.00 and for an entry level acquisition I thought that was a good deal.

I will be learning what this is capable of, I am really competing with just only me, and will be having fun learning precision rimfire matches.

I had a Savage MKII TRR that shot 1.25" groups at 100 yards with CCI mini mags when I did my part. They are capable of great accuracy. Take the time, get familiar and find out what she likes!

I had a mid 60's Anschutz 54 Prone rifle, with Eley Club Extra (Now called Team) just wouldn't quite cut the mustard! At 200 yards, it was a 1 in 3 or 4 chance of hitting an M&M, but would consistently hit Cheeze-it crackers. It has a Leupold 24x target scope on it.

Many of the 22 Steel Challenge matches limit scopes to 6x or put a seal on you power ring for 6x. To give you an idea of how this looks to your eye, a 6" square at 300 yards and 6x looks like a 2" square to the unaided eye at 100. Your glass needs to be high quality and dust free!

Good for you!

Of my .22 rifles. My 1958 Marlin Golden 39A and my 1977 Remington 572 are the most accurate. The M&P 15-22 is a close third and the Marlin Model 60 is also good. If I had to chose one to reach out over 100 yards it would be the Marlin Golden 39A.

A lot of fun at the range. I generally shoot at 50 yards and occasionally out to 100 yards but not competitively. Sounds like a great time.

My own favourite .22 Rifle is an original 1948 Model 1 Bruno, purchased as a young man back in 1956 from from the proceeds of rabbit hunting.
With it, using open sights, I could shoot the eye out of a rabbit at 100 yards, now I can barely see the rabbit... :(
All these years later, it still shoots a tight group, albeit with the aid of a x4 power scope. :)
