Since they can't import from Russia due to sanctions, Kalashnikov USA is going to start building AKs in Florida.

Kalashnikov cranking up AK-47 factory in Florida - Jan. 27, 2016
They are not. That's an old article they decided to rerun. Kalashnikov USA is NOT the same thing. Russians arnt coming or going. It's an American company that used a name SIMILAR to the original. Like Sony and Sanyo. KUSA is forbidden to use any Russian help, parts, machines, tools, blue prints or anything else. Forbidden by executive order. Nothing from Izhmash is allowed in.

KUSA (also know as RWS) was once an importer of the now banned Saiga. Since they can't import they decided to build their own while trying to commercialize on the name. Their build so far have been less then good with a lot of very poor and cheap materials. Lots of poor casting, soft metal and the use of Tapco where ever possible.

Contrary to believe USA made AKs have been made for years. At least as far back as 2010

If Saiga set up shop in....let's say Poland, can the US import those rifles?

RWC can't import genuine AK-M's from the IZHMASH mother-plant into the U.S.A. due to trade sanctions. They then secured the rights to use "Kalashinikov" and append it with U.S.A. Do not be fooled. Kalashnikov U.S.A. is pure branding. It's just another U.S. made AK-M. IMO, there is nothing special about a Kalashnikov U.S.A. AK-47. Just a mediocre, inexperienced manufacturer branded with a famous name.

What was special was buying a true, Russian made (as far as 922r compliance would allow), AK-M. There is a certain perverse firearms owner's pride in it. I own one. Otherwise, there are much better U.S.A. made, not from surplus parts kits, AK-M's.

Yes, but it would be a Polish made AK-47. I'll say it over and over. What was special was owning a new production Russian made AK-47, manufactured at the IZHMASH mother-plant.

Might as well just buy a WASR-10.

No. I believe it has to do with ownership. If say Radom bought Izhmash and moved it to Poland then maybe but still not sure. There was a "loophole" once that allowed Russian arms in via different countries. It has since been closed. There used to be a law that a product bought by another country from another and stayed there for a number of years (I believe it was 5 years) it became a product of that buyer country. Around 2010 we received a large shipment of Bulgarian AKS74U (Krinkov). These in fact were Russian rifles sold to Bulgaria in the late 80s and early 90s. Bulgaria eventually surplused them. They turned the rifles into parts kits and sold them to international gun dealers who passed them on up till they came here. Technically they were considered Bulgarian rifles despite actually being Russian. That has closed and it can no longer be done.

Actually Izhmash is looking to sue because of the name

Best battle proven rifle ever. The Russian Izhmash Saiga Sporter if you can get one in 308 or 223 is an awesome accurate rifle.

Thanks for the heads up. It's always interesting to keep abreast of third rate manufacturers trading solely on a name. Good to see Kalashnikov Concern (IZSHMASH) setting the record straight. I really hope no one gets suckered into buying a Kalashnikov U.S.A. AK-M solely on the "Kalashnikov" branding.

"The fact of the matter is that RWC company for several years has been the exclusive distributor of Kalashnikovs in the United States. After the imposition of sanctions the business of importing Russian-made weapons manufactured by the Concern was suspended.

To date, because of the imposed sanctions, the company has no rights to continue to cooperate, and even to contact representatives of Kalashnikov Concern. These measures only cause regret and impact primarily American consumers.

The contract with RWC signed in January 2014 for 5 years outlined delivery of up to 200,000 weapons per year. It is clear that RWC is interested in maintaining the US market share; that is why they filed an application for trademark registration.

Previously, the company announced independent production of Kalashnikov assault rifles in the United States. It was also reported that they established a “Kalashnikov US” corporation. The decision to create “Kalashnikov US” and begin production of Kalashnikov assault rifles in the United States was made by RWC independently. There was no consulting between RWC and Kalashnikov Concern.

For further action on the part of the Kalashnikov Group, including on the issue of similarity of the brand names, consultations are underway with lawyers and experts in the field of international law aimed at analyzing and monitoring the situation."

I have 2 WASRs "made in 2015". They're as accurate as I'll ever be and don't skip a beat. They're currently my favorite range toys. It would be nice to see an American company make a great quality, affordable (under $800) AK. Until then, I'm very pleased with my Romanian WASRs.
