Been watching old episodes of, The Sheriff of Cochise and, US Marshal, both with John Bromfield.

I think he may have used two S&W M&P/ Model 10's, one with five-inch bbl. and one with six-inch. I think one set of stag grips may be real and one imitation.

The gun at the first of the episode as credits ran was probably a Colt SAA. But in the episodes, he wore a M&P, in either a heavy buscadero rig or in a neat shoulder holster.

Anyone else think those were two different guns?

Episodes are on YouTube, but resolution isn't perfect.

These shows were filmed just a year or two before S&W adopted model numbers. So, technically, he had an M&P, not a Model 10.

Smith & Wesson began their current model numbering system in 1957.

Sheriff of Cochise ran from September, 1956- January, 1958.

U. S. Marshal ran from 1958-1960.

They're actually the same show...only the title changed because Sheriff Morgan was "promoted" to U. S. Marshal.

So, regarding what gun was used in each series...well, make of that what you will.

Frankly, trying to figure out which gun was carried by John Bromfield is getting deeper into run-of-the-mill fifties TV shows than I want to go.

Well, in that case, I am particularly thankful that you took the time to look up the exact show dates, which I didn't have.

Looks as if the studio could have, in theory, gotten a gun marked as Model 10 for the later show. I'm guessing they went with guns already on hand, and M&P .38's were among the staples of TV then.

On Sheriff Bufford Pussers personal gun list there is about 36 guns and one of them is listed as "Smith and Wesson M-19 4" barrel John Broomfield pistol (made specially for T.V.) series Sheriff of Cochise - 1 of 6 made Serial # 28605

I liked his shoulder holster. Never figgered how it stayed on, but it sure looked cool.

And the rifle on the car door panel was neat.

I found photos Online that convinced me that at least two sets of "stag" grips were involved, and found a pic of Bromfield holding one gun with a half-nickel front sight. So, a pre- Model 10. If memory serves, it had a five-inch barrel.

Thought I'd post that in case anyone else was interested. I'm probably not the only member who liked those shows.

BTW, Bromfield died in 2005. He seemed to have a personal interest in guns and in fishing, and in fact, left acting in 1960 to become a commercial fisherman, a job that he'd done previously in college.
