Yes, that's exactly how it works.I'm still cipherin' on your lower latch/knob. The rim lock, when engaged, keeps the door locked. The latch underneath looks to slip over its ramped lip on the jam when the door closes, but I can't really see how you open it from the out side. Can you turn the ring and raise the latch bar from the outside?
It'll only twist from either side so far because it's captured in the "keep" from the back.
Unlatches and latches with a most gratifying click too from either side, yet the door latches on its own when shut, no need to lift the latch yourself.
