the zombie threat is real

While very feasable to a warped mind such as mine. The creatures in the link above are no where near the high threat that true zombies are.

I have read the "Zombie Survival Guide". The chapter on the physiology of a zombie clearly points out that it is a completely foriegn (new) organ that replaces the brain that allows dead tissue to remain animate. A head without a body will continue to snap its jaws and try to bite.

What is suggested in the above link is merely a parasite that makes people go insane. Possibly on a murderous rampage. Easy pickings compared to zombies. Anything that would take down a normal human will also take down these insane attackers. There is no connection to re-animated tissue as in zombies, that would require total destruction of the brain-like organ, followed by the creamation of the remains.

Having said all that, any of the gun choices you would choose for self defense would be fine. For a major outbreak, I would go with a high-cap carbine of some sort, and a high-cap semi-auto pistol. Pretty much what you would use on zombies.

One great advantage that you would have with the insane folks in the link is that you could easily use artillary and explosives (grenades) to put down the hoards fast. This is not the case with zombies.

With zombies,"No place is safe, only safer!". With these critters, you could easily make a stand. Steven Kings book "Cell" had a similar outbreak. Murderous crazies, not zombies.

I plan on shining my special aircraft signal light with the hooded "GF" icon on it over towards GatorFarmer's spread an hope he will respond in a timely and effective fashion...

you gotta click through to the next pages wheelgunner, there are more to worry about than just brain parasites.

I am on the way! I also hope that Gatorfarmer "sees the light" when we all shine them up to the sky! I really like that idea. Batman would not be much help against zombies. Gatorfarmer, on the other hand.....

OK, I read the whole thing. Only if this happened,

All we're saying is that on an actual day on the actual calendar in the future, runaway microscopic nanobots will end civilization by flooding the planet with the cannabalistic undead.

would there be a critter SIMILAR to a zombie. I will give you that. The main difference being that these zombies will require non-organic mechanical nano-bots to function, whereas real zombies are 100& organic.

Also, in the article, it states that the creatures would only try to pass along the nano-bots if the body was going to die, and not until.

Real organic zombies have only one drive, and that is to eat non-zombies. The turn ratio is much faster and much more numerous.

I really like zombie threads!

Well, if I wasn't depressed enough...that just about did it. Maybe I will just hand myself...oh, wait....I will haunt you all.

For those that want to play with Google, it'll soon turn up that they left off "the flu" and that it has actually happened, sort of...

While they didn't shuffle around eating people, there were a number of survivors - enough to be studied in some detail - of the 1918 flu pandemic who were left in a lethargic, shambling state. They were pretty much "zombies" without the eating people part. (Presumably someone fed them.)

Old time film buffs will remember Lon Chaney "The man of a thousand faces" and Lon Chaney Jr (the Wolfman). His namesake great somethingest grandson served with my wife in the Navy. Chaney's wife was always hoarding food in fear of a zombie epidemic. Her theory was that it would be either food preservatives or genetically modified crops that would be the problem.

Anyway, the usual zombie gun answers are, variously-
A tricked out AK or AR/M4clone depending on the personality and budget of the poster. The Saiga, Garand, M1A, and shotguns get honorable mention.

Then - depending on the same set of factors - the Glock 17/19/34 is often picked with others going for the 1911 or various H&Ks (which look cooler). The more thoughtful consider getting a suppressor....

i knew I had a keeper when I took my wife to the range for the first time. We put up a zombie target and let her shoot my cousins Colt 1911. Racked up 4-5 head shots at 15 yards. Good person to have on the livings team when SHTF.

Why a suppressor?
Is it not cricket to "wake" them?

Sir, zombies have acute hearing (much better than ours), and gunshots tend to attract them. So in shooting a lone stray, you could be inadvertantly drawing dozens more to your location.

If you're already dealing with hordes, gunshot noise may be secondary to immediate survival, but if you're out and about and happen on a lone zombie, the sound suppressor would have considerable value.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Good to know the number of informed "living" is growing.

5.56 carbine and pistol, AND a .40cal Glock and folding Keltec Subby in same caliber. That way, I only need 2 kinds of magazines for 4 weapons. You want to do this by yourself, or have a friend to share in the duties?
