Thick Volquartzen extractor

EDIT: Just got off the phone with Volquartzen. They did have some go out that were out of spec. They're sending me a new one & I don't even have to send the other one back.

So I got a Volquartzen extractor for my brand new 15-22 Sport.

Won't go into the slot.

I measured the VQ part at .071" thickness. The stock part is .063".

Anybody else had this problem? Did S&W change the bolt slot width?

I have a Volquarsen exractor in my 15-22 and in five of my 10/22s. Right now I'm looking at the 15-22 and a 10/22 side by side. The extractor in the Ruger 10/22 appears thicker. I can't fit my digital caliper into the 10-22 breech to measure the thickness of the Volquartsen extractor (and I'm not taking time to take the bolt out), but I did measure a replaced Ruger extractor. It's .068 -- closer to your measured .071 than 063.

Do you think there's a chance you purchased a 10-22 extractor by mistake? Or, that Volquartsen put the wrong extractor in the package? Whatever the case, Volquartsen will make things right. They're good people. And their extractors are great improvements for both the Ruger 10/22 and the S&W M&P 15-22.

Nope. The profiles are very different. I have a grunch of VQ extractors in my Rugers as well.

VQ is making it right in a painless matter. That's OK with me. Everybody puts out a clanker from time to time. How they handle it is what's important. VQ gets an A+.

I just had the same thing happen to me. Just got an order from Brownells, went to install the extractor and it was too thick.

Oh geez, I just got another extractor from Brownell's for a second 15-22 I ordered. Hope I didn't get a bum part as I'm using these rifles for a Boy Scout shooting activity next week.

I checked the new one I just received from Brownell's and it does appear to be thicker than the one I installed last week in my rifle (the new one is for my son's rifle that should arrive this week). I also measured the new one at .071.

I sent an inquiry to Volquartsens via their website but have not yet received a response.

Just received the new one from Volquartsen and I'm disappointed. While it's slightly thinner than the one I received from Brownells; it's still thicker than OEM and is still too thick to install

Is there something you think the forum is going to do about this? A call to Volquartsen would accomplish more...

Geez man, he's just adding some historical information to the thread. Personally, I found it helpful because Volquartsen sent me a replacement that will arrive tomorrow and now I know there's a possibility that it may not be the correct size either.

So now you have a chance to fret about this for a day while you wait for your replacement extractor. What's helpful about that? I notice no dimensions were provided which always makes me wonder a little.
The possibilities are:
New extractor is correct (or acceptable) thickness and drops right in.
New extractor is correct (or acceptable) thickness but owner has 10 thumbs and can't get it installed.
New extractor is correct (or acceptable) thickness but has a burred or rolled edge that needs to be stoned before it can be installed.
New extractor is also too thick to fit in its' slot.
More for you to fret over while waiting. When it arrives and you have an opportunity to install it you'll know. Well, maybe not if 10 thumbs is the issue.

I have 2 VQ extractors I've never installed, they're spares along with extra springs and plungers.
Using my dial calipers:
OE extractor is .060"
VQ extractor is .062"
Bolt extractor slot is .067"

What's helpful is knowing in advance that Volquartsen may have screwed up even the replacement parts, so now I know to measure it to confirm it's correct before tearing the rifle apart to install it. Without jayfl77's report I would have assumed Volquartsen's competency in providing a functional replacement part and been surprised and frustrated at discovering yet another problem with my rifle laying disassembled in front of me.

It's only because of this thread that I knew to check the extractor before installation the first time around, letting me find the issue early and get the replacement part on the way before the new gun even arrived.

What should be a bigger concern is getting the chamber and barrel really clean and the ejector alignment.

Ugh, I just received my replacement extractor from Volquartsen. The original OEM extractor measures .06" on my calipers. The first Volquartsen extractor I bought (from Brownell's) for my newest rifle measures .071". The replacement extractor Volquartsen sent me measures .07".

The Volquartsen extractor I bought from Joe Bob Outfitters for my other 15-22 fit without any issues. I'm not going to take the rifle apart to measure the thickness of that part, but visually it's clearly thinner than the two extractors currently sitting on my desk.

Same problem, I ordered mine from Brownells ,too thick
Contacted Volquartsen and they sent me out the replacement, got it yesterday same issue.quality control issues I guess

Took it to the range & put 70rds of Aguila HV and 30rds of Aguila SV through it with zero malfs. We'll see how it functions dirty.

Wish I'd thought to write down the measurement of the new part...

Sliding a new extractor across a stone a few times to smooth and deburr the faces can do wonders. Would be interesting to know how thick yours is.

EDM isn't supposed to leave burrs. Stoning was gonna be my solution if it didn't work. I may still if it binds up when it gets dirty.

I was preety stoked that the rifle cycled the SV ammo.
