Kind of fell in love with the look of the new 629 Mountain Gun when the SHOT show videos started coming out. Thought about ordering one but I really don't NEED another gun I won't have time to shoot.
LGS has a 6" 629 on the shelf, no lock, SN in the N890,xxx range so early 1980s. Does not have a pinned barrel, but I don't know that the 629s ever did...newer than what my tastes have always been...
Anyway...looking for a "what would you do..."
A. New 4" Lipsey's MG for $1200?
B. Used 1980s 6" 629 for $950?
C. You're never going to use it anyway.

There were P&R 629s. 6", 4", 8-3/8". No P&R Mountain Guns of course.

I stumbled into an early Mountain Revolver a few years back, so that itch has been scratched. If you just want a range gun, the older 629 is the obvious choice. Any thoughts of carrying it afield, the new MG and recommend some rubber grips if you're going to shoot full power magnums all that much.

If this ends up being a fairly limited run of MGs by Lipseys, there could be some collector juice, but no way they'll end up as valuable as the originals.

It has nothing to do with the price by the pre lock!

Sounds like the only wrong answer was C.

Thanks for the input. Is $950 for a non P&R N Frame in line? It's a tad newer than what I usually follow. Being the tail end of the N serial numbers, it's certainly in my neighborhood.

Your location can have an effect on price. For my area, that's not too far out of line, but not a screaming deal. It will eventually come down to how much you're willing to pay.

Call Me Picky, but I believe the older units have a better fit, especially at the crane. Older models of most anything Smith are better fit, not only the 629's. JMHO. Jim

That would be a tough choice for sure. I would like to have one of the new Mtn. Guns, but the pre-lock 629 is a very good revolver. My 629-4 is a very well fit revolver, crane and all. Made in 6-94, it does not have the P&R features. It is very accurate but I wouldn't want to carry it all day. 😁
the extra $250 won't seem like a lot in a year. They both have advantages and disadvantages don't look at the price, buy the one you want.
