The Chief dropped this.."relic"..off to see if I could separate the receiver from the barrel and feed tube.

Someone gave it to him. It had been sitting on a shelf for a few years..right under a water leak.

Looks to be scrap to me. Too bad, as it's a Winchester 9422 Eagle Scout Edition .22.

Such neglect....what a shame. Unfired too.

The only rust is what you see.The bore is shiny..surprisingly. It was dripped on...but not submerged. Really strange.

OK, now you have then separated, then what? The bbl may be ok, but the feed tube looks like you could put your thumb nail through it. I would shoot it the way it is if it will shoot. If not, it might make a dandy tomato stake

If it shoots and extracts, then get a feed tube and it should be O.K. Good truck or boat gun. Not much else you can do to hurt it.

You cannot remove the feed tube plunger to load it...so a really poor single shot,currently.
He bought a new tube/magazine assy and a forearm (he broke it taking it off) but ran into some...difficulty getting it apart.

Looks like it was on the Titanic when it sunk!

This is how he dropped it off..i've done nothing to it...other than move it into a dark area of my shop...

Says he's going to Cerakote it gold once he gets it back together. Oh boy..

A new outer mag tube.
Remove the bbl from the frame. The bbl can be 'spin polished' in little time on a belt and will look like new.
With careful attention, the markings can be saved. If some get a little faint they can be recut if needed.

The frames are steel AFAIRemember.
You could carefully repolish and then replate.

Recut any marking as necessary but the orig markings are Laser Engraved so they are very lightly marked. Once you start recutting by hand, it's the type of job where you just go ahead and do the entire thing to make it all look the same.

Or you can polish off everything that's there and make it a plain blued frame.
Much cheaper than recutting anything and then plating.
I don't think a restored B/Scout commemeorative would have much value for what it would take in $$ to get you there.

A nice blued & walnut 9422 shooter can be had from it.

The frames and bbls are easy to polish correctly with belt and hard wheels. Hand polishing is always an option. Stay away from anyone that wants to shine it up real nice with the buffer they got for a birthday present.
Hot blue or Rust Blue finish

It's not a difficult project.

I just spin polished an FN 22semiauto bbl that was rusty. Then recut the lettering. Ready for bluing.
The simple frame & trigger guard polished up as well.
I'll post some pics if I can get the disc camera to co-operate.

Don’t give up on it just yet. The one pictured below was just as bad. Mechanically it was great, but it was stored under a bed on the carpet. The other side was better but had some rust. I soaked it in Ed’s red to break the bulk of the rust free. The rest was done with files, sandpaper and time. I chose to use Brownell’s cold blue. I was hoping to end up with a decent truck gun. There where only a couple of pits I couldn’t get out.

What a shame… I recently sold a Winchester 9422 Boy Scout to a friend for $1000 and that was giving him a deal. I still have a sealed brick of Boy Scout .22’s, which seem to bring about $250.

The last few Eagle Scout 9422’s I’ve seen sell went for about $5000. That one is worth having properly restored.

Parts like feed tubes are available for these rifles, so it's not a lost case. However items like the brass plating on the receiver may not be able to be restored, so Rust Bluing may be the best option. I would suggest watching some videos by Mark Novak on Youtube, he does some amazing work with some really rusty guns.

While it will never again be to Factory spec's, it can be restored and made to be functional. You might even be able to find a replacement magazine tube. It's a shame...... the 9422 is a great rifle and one of my fav's.

Looks like Midwest Gun Works has outer magazine tubes available for around $35. It’s a start…

Hopefully the wood can be saved. I doubt you’ll be able to find a properly marked replacement barrel. Fixing the barrel and receiver will be the toughest challenge. Those have unique markings and eliminating the pitting and restoring the engraving and roll marks will be a real challenge. Rebluing/replating shouldn’t be a big deal once all the metal is prepped.

Good luck! If I had that gun, I’d limit the restoration budget to about $1500. If it can’t be done for that, I’d clean it up the best I could and use it as a shooter.

Has anyone looked into would the factory refurbish it? You might be surprised at the cost vs. what you may spend in time and effort and still have a damaged rifle. The gun has the possibility of having a good value id done right.

My old 2" S&W Model 12-2 has a bit more "honest wear" than my comfort zone. In other words, most of the black anodizing on the top of the frame is gone. I'm considering Cerakoting it even though I've retired it to the safe. Satan & Bubba have nothing to do with it.

Browning took up the Winchester name and all the levers are special edition made in Japan. I'm not sure if they offer a Winchester 94 in any flavor now.

They offer more standard catalog Model 94 options than they have since before WWII including;
- 20” carbine;
- 20” short rifle;
- 24” rifle;
- 24” deluxe sporting; and
- 20” take down.

All of them are available in .30-30 and .38-55, and the take down is available in .450 Marlin as well.

I doubt they will bring back the 9422 however as it’s direct competition with the Browning BL-22.
