Every fall I take mrs meaneyedcatz for a drive in the country to enjoy the fall colors and appreciate Gods creation. It was a good day and full of history which is something the both of us enjoy.
Outside of STL we drove down hwy 21 to Washington state park which has Indian petroglyphs, how cool is that? Further down we went through Old Mines. The French mined lead here in 1700. It is said that French was spoken in this area until the late 1900’s.
Then down to Potosi. Two nice antique stores but some forgotten history. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and his friend Levi Pettibone left this town in , I believe, 1818 and traveled to the White river valley in southwest mo. Present day lakes taneycomo, table rock, bull shoals. Journaling the trip, very interesting! The book RUDE PURSUITS AND HIGH PEAKS documents the trip. They were going to record the Ozarks mineral resources. Later Schoolcraft did for the Mississippi River what Lewis and Clark did for the Missouri River, discovered it’s source of lake Itaska.
Also Moses Austin sent his son Steve Austin ( not the bionic man ) on a mission and long story short became the father of Texas.
From there it was west on hwy 8 and drove past Courtois pronounced code a way, Baptist church. Didn’t stop but some searching shows it has been in continuous operation since 1829. As we drove on 8 I couldn’t help but picture Schoolcraft, Pettibone, the Delaware Indians who inhabited the area AND the Cherokees who were forced from their land on the trail of tears walking along with us.
Had a delicious burger in Steeleville. Then up to Cuba to old rt 66 and back home.
We traveled about 160 miles and only 10 on the interstate. Fall colors were plentiful and the history was refreshing. And the mrs and I enjoy each other’s company. A good day!!
Next weekend is supposed to have good colors also if you are in the area. Get out and enjoy!
