Those Special Model 60's

A while ago I traded my (wife's) 60-9 .357 for a NIB Ashland Shooter's Supply M-60 target. Then a fellow member (Wrangler of Stray Chiefs) tipped me off to a 1 of 171/4 3" SB's. Then there came a Jovino's Special, which I have not taken possession of yet. Now, what am I do do with another Ashland target. I suppose I could use it as trading material for an NY-1. I'm thinking I should get the early -9 back. So many M-60's to collect with so little time. I will hold off on a picture until they are all together.

The 2" model 60 Chiefs Special Target is a spectacular snubby.

I carried one in a Galco Ankle Glove as my BUG from the time when they first came out right up until the J-Magnum was introduced

In addition to putting the rubber boot grips on mine, as you can see I also had a red insert added to the front sight. This little revolver made it easy to take head shots on the standard B27 target at 25 yards due to the improved sites


I was so impressed with the design of this little revolver and in my ability to make long shots with it that I purchased a 2nd one to keep as a backup at the house. I still own that second revolver to this day but it has not had any modifications made to it

The only reason that I switched to the newer model 60 was to gain the additional performance of the 357 Magnum cartridge. The improved barrier penetration was important to me.

I have been waiting ever since for Smith and Wesson to produce a 2" J-Magnum Model 60 Chiefs Special Target

That first Chief's Special Target snub nose that I got in the 80s started a love affair with the 2" adjustable rear sight/shark fin design. As you can see there are several very similar revolvers in this J frame group photo. These include Model 50s and Model 34s

Even today if a 3rd 2" Model 60 Chiefs Special Target became available, I would probably add it to what I own

BTW, I would suggest that you do not hold off on a group photo until the next one arrives because there is always going to be a next one, no matter what you own. Besides you already know that we love pictures here on the Forum

Colt_saa, why don't you roll your own? A 60-9, older barrel, and rear sight/machining should do it.

I actually already have all of the parts necessary to do that sitting in my work bench, the problem is that I have so many firearms related projects on my brain that I have not gotten around to doing it yet

Modifying Smith and Wessons is something I have been doing for the last 30 plus years.
