TIPPING - - SO OUT OF HAND NOW it's absurd!

Even the Chicago Tribune feels the pinch...

As a carpenter I occasionally receive "tips" .once or twice a year I'll have a generous ,appreciative client make a gift of a bottle of rum or wine , sometimes an envelope with a little cash
I think this is a fine thing to do ,and would encourage all of you to tip your carpenter ;-)

If anyone deserves a tip it's police, fire and EMS, not some Doordash guy sampling your food before he delivers it.
Not always but some folks in the more affluent neighborhoods would rant at us during the power failure after a storm even though our trucks were marked City of Hollywood Public Utilities while the working class 'hood residents would inquire what we knew then offer us a cold drink.
Could attitudes toward tipping follow socio-economic lines? Only the Shadow knows.

Those who live by tips - Know the value of tipping.

In my experience:

Those with less tend to give more.
Those with more tend to give less.

Yes there are exceptions. My comment is for a large portion of each group.

When I used to do the coffee group meetings, a wise older gentle lady would get the waitress's attn and say: I am giving you your tip no deary, so there won't be any trouble. Other times I encountered such *****y attitude from both male and female wait staff that I would stand and move to another section. I don't care how deep your college loans are, until you graduate and establish yourself as a professional, if you work for a living, you are no better than another working class hero, such as my self. A Arizona carpenter must consume 2 gallons of ice water per day sometimes leaving a portion of that in blood and splinters. We never got tips.

Had another example of the real cost vs what it says on the menu. My wife and three buddies went to a place in downtown Vegas. When the bills arrived, the waitress said with a straight face that there was an 18% (!!!) service charge. Oh really. Then, on the credit card machine, it came up with a list of suggested tips!:eek::eek: On questioning the server, the reply was, "Oh, that's in case you want to add a bit extra". My wife gave her the polite version of "bite me" and that's the last business she will conduct at that restaurant.

Our youngest daughter paid for her university tuition and books from the tips she made as a waitress at a Pizza Hut. This was the days before most pizza was delivered. She was a good waitress and got good tips. We paid for her room and board, car and clothes.

I tip generously for good service. I always tip in cash and and it to the server.

In a place where I'm not known I will put a stack of Golden Dollars in the server's hand and tell they I'm giving them Golden Dollars and not quarters. I hope I'm remembered for leaving a good tip.

My waitress at the recent surveyors meeting remembered me from the first time I was there. She was glad to see me because she had run out of Golden Dollars and that's what the Tooth Fairy leaves at her house.

I spent 3 1/2 weeks in Chile and Argentina a few weeks ago. High end restaurants had a 10 % tip added and each time we were brought a bill we were told it was completely optional, feel free to take it off if you wish. It was a refreshing attitude to see.

I read an article the other day where the checkout process at a self-serve kiosk at a fast-food restaurant asked if the customer wanted to add a tip?
Again, the question is FOR WHAT? The machine isn't going to get the tip. The kids packing the orders aren't either. It is just an attempt to guilt people into paying more - or maybe to trick morons into paying more...
I think that your second guess is more likely to be correct.
