IIRC during WWII people were encouraged to have chicken coops-like Victory Gardens. In one nearby upscale town that has gone from farming to housing some people were quacking about a neighbor's chicken coop, it was found there was no ordnance banning them.

I recall as a youngster, My grandparents had a large back yard with a chicken coop, pen and live chickens. But than this was a small rural town. We also used to have a man would go around early every spring with a mule and plow up and till garden plots. Everyone in town had large lots, none of this zero lot line housing.

Wife & I have been raising chickens for about 7 years now. So I haven't kept up with what eggs are costing in the grocery stores these days.

We usually give eggs to family and neighbors so we don't routinely sell them. $1.50 a dozen is usually what we charge, and have seen no reason to charge it.

The wife took two 18 packs to her coworkers last week and one of them told her that the last time she bought eggs at the store it cost her $8.00 a dozen. Is that what they're charging now?

Yup - and more.
One local big name, fancy grocery store was selling xlarge AA for $12/dozen but that was big city Los Angeles.

Not sure about the urban areas but there used to be are many, many small ranchettes that were doing chickens.

I have a few friends that have big homes and a pretty fancy life style and I doubt if the price of eggs or any groceries concern them in the least but they have chicken coops just because they like chickens. One friend gives nearly all of his eggs away to the local fire station.

Locally, large eggs are around $5/doz. When I was a kid, my father raised chickens. I don't remember any issues about washing the eggs, my mother did that all the time and she didn't complain. Here in San Antonio, anyone can raise chickens, but the limit is eight. There is also some size limit on your chicken coop.

I don't find $3.00 a dozen for large high?
Everything's related to transportation, economics 101, that will start coming down soon.

One of my neighbors has chickens off and on. Two nights ago I found a chicken foot and lower leg on my patio (fox and coyote around here). Eggs were $11/18 the last time I bought some

If I still wanted to grow eggs I would get ducks. Duck eggs are far better eating than chicken eggs. I had about 30 ducks at one time, couldn't give the eggs away fast enough, they sure added up quickly! I had 6 kids at the time.:D

If you want your eggs to last a long time before using them DO NOT wash them. Only in the US are commercially grown eggs washed. If you are worried about them being "dirty" then wash just before cracking, but not when they are first collected.
