Tired of traditional turkey

Most of the family is too far away for travel this year, with the weather and all, so it's just the wife and I. We decided to try a different approach to the traditional feast, and just smoke/grill a turkey breast. Along with all the other goodies of course.

All dressed up, with a wrap of bacon and topped with a honey dijon glaze. I'm looking forward to a much tastier bird in a few hours.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody. So who else is trying something different?

A while back, deep fried turkeys became the fad around here and everyone had to try that approach for at least 2 or 3 years... really just to get it perfected! :D But once we finally got it perfected, we went back to the good, old traditional (and exceedingly boring) approach. ;) I don't even know why other than the fact that the fad had kind of died down a bit and the bulk cooking oil was getting expensive and hard to find. :confused:

This year was another very boring oven-cooked, by-the-book turkey. It came out fine, but I'm game for something new. Isn't it about time for a new turkey cooking fad to emerge? :p :confused: :)
 
Going to some in-laws today. I called and asked if I could bring the porketta. Thanksgiving just isn't complete without porketta, a miracle food that has been known to cure eating disorders. They will be putting the ham in the freezer.

A complete thanksgiving would include a linguini carbonara. Calvin Trillin used to lobby for carbonara to replace turkey. For me, it is a side dish that trumps mashed potatoes and green bean casserole.

I'll take some root vegetables, though. Turnips, parsnips, rutabagas and carrots, mashed with salt, pepper and plenty of butter.

That certainly looks good.

We are traditionalists. Thanksgiving is a low-n-slow turkey. Christmas dinner is roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, trifle and plum pudding w/custard. New Year's is pork ribs, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, greens and cornbread.

What about the lutefisk? Where does it fit in:rolleyes:
 
For me, it was a traditional slow roasted turkey with stuffing, mashed russet potatoes, corn (fresh and frozen during the season this year), gravy from the bird, and cranberry sauce.
I think about straying from tradition, but this is, for me, a once a year opportunity and I take it. Leftovers are also a highlight.
 
...and we're stuffed...

Smoked it from 12 to 1, then turned the grill up to 325 and let it bake until 3:30. It was about the juiciest, best tasting turkey I've ever had. For those of you with a pellet grill you've got to try this, you won't be disappointed.

I won't be making a traditional bird ever again.
