To all of the Mod 29 experts - How did I do?

I wanted to get the model 29 experts opinion on my latest purchase. I still haven't got it yet, but should be recieving it tomorrow or the next day. A 5 screw pre 29 w/case & acces. from Jackthedog on AA. Here is the closed auction link.

I thought it was a fair BIN price. I watched it really close for a week while I sold a couple guns to have the money to bid on it near the end of the auction. But with a week left to go, it was approaching the BIN price & I was afraid someone else was going to snatch it up, so I went for it. By far the most I have ever spent on a gun

I'm no expert on Pre-29s but the SWSC3 says 3500 for ANIB or 2000 for excellent and that's almost 3 years ago. Your gun is about as close to NIB ad it can get. Top it off with perfect palm swell grips, the screwdriver and the box all in great shape and I think you might have stole that gun. All in all that's a beautiful set. Are you going to shoot it?

Chris, I think you did OK, this is an earlier version with the six grove backstrap. If I owned this pistol I don't know if I would sell it for that.

Thanks for the info Bill, I thought it was a good deal also. No I won't be shooting it. I am one of those collectors that has a bunch of safe queens & a few guns that I shoot. I do like to take them out of the safe often & make sure they are clean & snug in the safe.

You are right Tim, the front insert was changed. He had stated that in the auction. That is another reason I wasn't afraid to go for it, because of the seller. Jackthedog is known on AA as a top notch seller. I have bought from him in the past & was very happy, so I am sure I will be this time. Thanks.

Chris, after looking at the description I see that it is listed that way. You know this is a guy thing look at the pictures and don't read the instructions.

Putting a red insert back in it is an easy job.

I hope you enjoy it, I know I would.

You stole it.
First thing, GET a LETTER.
On the front sight- first, see if it letters. If it does not, I think I might still leave it alone. It is possibly gold, not brass, and appears to be a very neat job. It is part of the history of the gun. The factory did a few gold sights, and the owner could have been copying that.
 
The price in today's market is very good. If the gun was shipped in May 1956 (only a check of factory records will tell for sure), the case is not correct for the 44 Magnum as it most likely dates to very late in 1956 or sometime in 1957. Also, the screwdriver should be the one with the knurled Al handle. The one you have is more valuable, but you want the right one. There has been debate on this issue, but the all steel screwdriver is not correct based on the many 44 Magnums I have owned or examined that are known to be original.

All of the above being said, congratulations on obtaining a great example of my favorite model

Thanks Lee & Doc. I definately will be lettering it. I can't wait to see what comes up in the letter. I also can't wait to get the gun in. Anytime now.

Doc, when you say it might not be the right box if it letters to May 1956, I assume you mean the right box would be the one with the button slide release instead of the latch. Please lmk. Thanks.

I bid on the same gun (I am colteer on AA) and was bidding on the 29-1 at the same time. I also believe the pre-29 was a good deal at the BIN price. I got a refund check this week for insurance on a house I just sold. If I had had it last week I would have beat you to the gun

FWIW I saw one like it at Tulsa not as slick, same box but no tools and the asking price was 3K

I knew I was making the right decision not to wait through this week. I had a feeling that if no one did the BIN, it would have gone for more than the BIN eventually. I didn't even see the 29-1 till it was over & posted on this site. It wouldn't have mattered, I couldn't have bought both. Sorry you didn't get it, but I am glad I beat you to it.

Chris...If the 44 Magnum letters to February-November 1956, the correct case is the one with the button/slide latch and pebble grain exterior. Originally, the serial number would have been written on the bottom of the case in white grease pencil. If the gun letters to December 1956 or later, you have the correct case.

Chris, the gun you won was shipped in May 1956. Get a factory letter however for the exact specifics on this gun as it will only enhance the package. I informed the seller (MW) on the shipping date when he first run the gun on the auction as well as the information Bill just posted with regard to the box. I think Mark actually posted this additional info in the auction before the auction ended. This said, despite the box/screw driver issues, you got a good deal from a very reputable and honest dealer. I know you'll enjoy this early .44 Magnum.

Thanks for the info Chuck. I am not to worried about the box being the wrong one. I am just happy to be one step closer to having at least one of every different dash model of the 29. I have a pre 29 (now), 29 no dash, a couple 29-2's, and a 29-3. I think the 29-1 might have to wait awhile & might be a little hard to come by, but it will happen sooner or later. Thanks.

I was considering that myself, but right now vacation is more important. I think you did well. Subtract the goodies by retail standards, and that's what you have in the gun, which I believe is better than gold, silver, etc. I have a four-screw in almost 999.99, and I will not part with it, or shoot it. If I wanted a shooter, I would opt for a 29-2...nice gun, but no comparison in 1957 quality.

Well I just got it in & it is absolutely beautiful. It looks better than the pictures. The front sight insert looks like it is real gold. I can't wait to letter it w/Roy. Would the letter say anything about the insert in the front sight? Thanks.

Chris...when you send for the letter, be sure to mention the 44 has a gold ramp instead of a red ramp insert. Roy will comment on it if you mention it. If the invoice does not show it as being original, he will most likely indicate it is a replacement for the original red ramp. Is the rear sight a white outline, or is it outlined in gold also?

Include a complete description of the gun...finish, barrel length, type of stocks, serial number, etc.
