Today, March 2nd, is the anniversary of the day that 59 Gents signed a document that stated we were breaking away from Mexico.

That document was signed in here:

This place is also known as: Washington on the Brazos.

Gee, and all this time I was thinking you were The Gringo Kid.

Just kiddin' you have a great reasons to be proud of your state!

On the proud part, oh yeah--having Audie Murphy as a native Texan is great too. :-))

I often wondered why Washington on the Brazos is no longer a city? Or am I wrong? Anyway, Texans are proud of all of the men and women that took an idea and were willing to fight and die in order to establish the Republic of Texas!!

It took until 24 April of 1836 for the boys up in San Jacinto to make Santa Anna understand what these fellers meant what they wrote. Too bad the heroes of The Alamo had to die to give Sam Houston time to raise a army that only took 18 minutes to defeat the Mexican army

Don't forget the Battle of Goliad. Every year they commerate the occasion with a living history event. My wife's school had a field trip to Goliad, it was one of the few occasions that I was at home(instead of being in Iraq). All of her middle school kids were quite awed and respectful throughout the event. The re-enactors were very convincing and in several of them had been participating for over 20 years or more.
Now let me paint the picture a little more, these middle school kids are from San Antonio and while visiting the Alamo, it was hard for them to visualize the battle because the Alamo is in the middle of town.

The battleground of Goliad is the opposite. The battle site and church grounds were not gobbled up by real estate people so they have a lot of the orginal fort and surrounding area still intact. It gave all visitors a chance to "Step back in Time" to see, hear and participate.

Great event in American History. Second only to breaking away from the British.
As I have previously mentioned, when I go to the National Parks out West I encounter a lot of foreigners. Often they out number the Americans.
When I Talk to Brits I always say ' my family used to live in England. But we had bad breath and bad body odor, but so did everybody else. We also had bad attitude.' They told us , go down to the coast. Get on a ship. Just go somewhere. Anywhere.
The more I think about it the more I really think that might be true. The folks who emigrated from England to the colonies and then later some of them to Mexico were a pretty audacious bunch.
Happy Birthday Texas!

If I recall? we lost only (not that thats not more than enough) 9 men killed at San Jacinto.

That im not sure of. All I remember was that it was a very small community.

I was born and raised mostly in Georgia but I can claim a little Texas upbringing since we lived in San Antonio de Bexar. I went to high school there both my junior and senior years. A belated Happy Independence Day to all the Texicans here.
