I'm not a big tomahawk collector, but I do own and practice with a couple. I originally purchased an inexpensive SOG tomahawk, and it still resides in the SUV in case it's needed as a tool to help at a crash site or whatever, and of course for self defense. I later bought a Camillus, and a good friend fabricated a leather sheath and deerskin handle wrap for me. I also have a Cold Steel practice 'hawk and knife. I stayed away from wooden handled 'hawks for serious work, but they are fun for throwing. I think that many Americans relate to tomahawks based on their usage in our history and through movies and TV. How about "The Last of the Mohicans", or Mel Gibson in "The Patriot"? If you've read or watched "The Terminal List", you'll know that the SEAL hero (James Reece) uses a Winkler-Sayoc tomahawk (combat axe) for some dirty work. There are some good YouTube videos, like those from SAMI, that demonstrate some devastating techniques. Any tomahawk fans out there?

I have a SOG throwing hawk somewhere around here but the one that I’m most proud of is the one that I traded for from a friend of mine.
He forged this from an old Railroad spike that I had on hand and. I made him an antler handle stone blade knife.

I have commercial made one I picked up somewhere in the late 70's. In the early 90's I had it out throwing at some unsplit logs. The kids thought this was fun and grabbed a hatchet and stated throwing that along with my hawk! I forbid them to mess up my hawk's handle. They noticed the straight handle of the hawk performed much better than the "S" hatchet handle. So we rehandled a messed-up hatcher with a "California Framer" Hammer handle. I used a bench sander to remove the swell at the base. The kids liked and pretty soon we had about 10 straight handled hatchets flying around! We made a life sized "Man" target by screwing 2 by 10's to the back of a dilapidated outbuilding. The kids had the groin and head areas destroyed in about two weeks. Not real Tomahawks, but the kids were real deadly! As the grew up and moved on they each to one or two hatchets with them. Guess what? The oldest 5 grandkids are deadly too! The grandkids have gotten pretty good throwing the "S" handled hatchets too!

A couple of Mark McCoun ‘hawks. A polled hawk, more traditional, and a more aggressive Apache. I’m a hawk and small axe fan. I keep a Wenger Beohawk and a Eastwing Camp Axe in the truck for general use.
