Tony Bennett: the last of the great crooners

"Legendary singer Tony Bennett has earned 20 Grammys over his career, in addition to numerous other awards, honors, and accolades. He's become the last of America's great crooners, but even though he has been going strong into his 90s despite a public battle with Alzheimer's, the much-loved entertainer will perform no more.

As his last show, Bennett gave a heart-wrenching performance in New York City billed as 'One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga,' revealing his immediate retirement. “There won’t be any additional concerts,” his son and manager, Danny Bennett, told Variety on August 13. “This was a hard decision for us to make, as he is a capable performer. One, however, that was made by doctors’ orders."...

Way back now, seems like everything is way back,
Tony was the first Big Name Act that I saw in Vegas.
For several years I went out to that Coast a number of times.
I always tried to swing through Vegas.
Saw a show, picked up some Silver Dollars.
Sometimes bought guns.
Once bought a Nickel Colt SA there.

That was a good show Sunday night that he did with Lady Gaga. He could still hold the notes and didn't miss any words. Pretty amazing for 95. We should all be so lucky. I spend a lot of my day looking for my dang coffee cup, let alone remembering a song with hundreds of people looking at you. Great entertainer.

I commented last evening while watching the show about how
he could still hold the notes. I think it is neat how Lady Gaga
has recognized him and his great talent. Great show to go into
retirement with good memories and love from the audience.

I love pretty much all music but Tony Bennett and the old crooners had special talents that didn't require electronic manipulations to make them palatable. Never really cared for Lady Gaga and her over the top persona that she has created but that all changed when I watched her interact with Tony Bennett on their combined album. She appears to truly hold him in reverence and her talent really came through when working with Tony.

I wish Tony a long retirement and hope that he is able to hold on to the memories of the joy he has brought to his audiences.

I recorded his last show with Lady Gaga last night, and am looking forward to viewing it with my wife tonight.

Tony has been an iconic performer, and I can clearly hear him singing "I left my heart in San Francisco" in my mind.

Tony, I left my heart in old San Francisco many years ago; it was a great place. Sad to say, no longer true. I have no plans to visit again; I'll just reminisce.

Good luck to an exceptional man.

John

You know you are good when people know who you are taling about when they just say your first name.
The SF song was a great song that was helped by and even greater singer.

I was born in SF and was able to start seeing entertainers in the Casino's at the young age of nine. There were many that were really good and some that were great but only a few that stood on top of the hill, above the rest.
His style was easy to be with and listen to and make you feel like wanting more, even when the curtain came down.

It is amazing to me that at95, he could hold on to those notes as long as he did, something, lots of the new singers can't even dream of doing.

He will be missed but I hope that he has a fantastic life and time with his family members, and be able to relax and unwind.

I just told my wife while watching the tv show, that I would have just liked to be at one of his practice sessions, to see all the hard work and fun with all the people involed and have a peak at the "Snacks" that were on the table for him to nibble on !!

It had to be "a good life".....................

Rest, kind Sir.

This ^^^ And at 95. Amazing.

When he finally reaches the Pearly Gates, they're going to swing open so fast it'll take his breath away- and this from a guy who has LUNGS !

They are so well paired. I have long admired Tony and his arrangements. He always surrounds himself with world class musicians. He and the mic were made for each other.

Fortunately for all of us we have Harry Connick Jr and Michael Buble to carry the torch as they have both voiced their reverence for him.

It's a wonderful thing to live in the age of YouTube.

No question he was - IS - a "first class" act:

I’ll just leave this here . . .

Tony Bennett said:
Bennett fought in World War II; it was an experience that deeply affected his worldview. And ever since, he’s been a vocal proponent of gun control in America. He said:

The war gave me a social conscience. And the war itself made me a pacifist; I just know that every gun in the world should melt somehow and as soon as possible.

I could link the source, but it also discusses his religious views . . .

This is so sad. But he has certainly earned his rest. He leaves large legacy of timeless music to hold his place in the musical world. I also like the music he made with K.D. Lang Both great voices that blend perfectly.

Thank you for the music, tony. I wish for to have an enjoyable and LOOOOONG retirement. God bless you Tony. You will always be a class act.
