I've owned a couple of Springfield rifles for a few years now, and wanted to know more about proper handling and shooting both of them. First, my CMP service grade Springfield M1 from 1942 (barrel replaced in 1947) that I picked up at a local gun show about a dozen years ago. Second, my Springfield M1A Loaded that I received as a birthday present from my son in 2016. He manages several local gun stores and it was quite a pleasant surprise! I've shot both rifles, but wanted to know how to properly sight them in, use slings, etc. I contacted the CMP Match Director at my gun club and he readily agreed to meet me yesterday at the 600-yd range for some "Military Rifle 101" instruction. We went over types of rifle slings, proper sling adjustments and fitting for shooting prone and standing positions, and basic safety and protocols during matches. He then took me down to the 200-yd stage for zeroing the sights. As you probably know, both sighting systems (M1 and M1A) are almost identical, although my M1 has the locking bar. The club's high power range has electronic scoring which makes it super easy to record shots and make quick sight adjustments. It only took me only 8 shots with each rifle to zero the sights and put successive rounds into the X-ring at 200 yards. I'm very happy with both rifles, and plan to check out the monthly CMP and Military Rifle matches at the local club. Enjoy!

Port Malabar?

I should probably get a few more of them.

You are way behind the power curve. These belong to a friend of mine. On the right are almost all M1 Carbines and M1 Garands. Get to work and start buying more!! I gave up trying to keep up with him..........

You just cannot have too many shooting irons. :D

I have a few Garands, I suppose this is the nicest of the group -

It's in 308 Winchester and was outfitted by DGR Gunworks. I use an Alley globe front sight and the rear sight ladder takes standard apertures. Very nice shooting rifle.

Honorable mention to "Son of Springfield" with a detach magazine -

Holy cow! Your buddy could arm a couple of platoons with that arsenal! I don't even want to know how much he's got stored in the ammo locker. LOL!

I have the privilege of owning a CMP M1093A3.

The zenith of military bolt actions IMHO. That thing just plains shoots good.

Also, a Winchester M1 Garand, a CMP rifle that was gifted to me by my father before he passed. I cherish that.

And a circa 1989 SA M1A with a USGI stock, slotted handguard, and a Fulton Armory dummy selector. Looks like the real thing.

Finally, an Underwood M1 Carbine non-import non-CMP that is pretty minty. Bought it 25 years ago for $800. Though it was a lot back then. Guess I did OK.

The old stuff is truly cool and fun to shoot.

Now that is a GOOD day at the range! I absolutely love the M-1 Garand. whenever I take mine to the range, definitely gets attention. I always offer to let anyone shoot it too. I am honored to be caretaker for a true piece of history. not much more rewarding than hitting steel at 500 meter range.

US Rifle M1...the most magnificent rifle ever made.

Go to the range and uncase a M1 Garand and strong men weep and applaud with respect...beautiful women throw themselves at your feet...and the enemies of America cower in fear and run.

The Garands are fine tools of war. I never cared for them because they are so big and heavy, and hard to wrap your hands around.
I do like the “PING”’when the empty clip ejects out the top.

This is not to mention a half dozen M1903's, A3's and a couple of M1903A4's with scopes. He also have three M1917's and a couple of Krags. And enough bayonets to outfit all.
