OK, here goes with my top 5 not necessarily in order. Bound to start some spirited debate:

1. High Noon (Gary Cooper was the man).
2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. (Spaghetti Westerns set the standard).
3. Shane (We never really know if he survived)
4. The Magnificent Seven (for the Boot Hill scene if nothing else)
5. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Bogie at his best).

Your turns.

Lonesome Dove, El Dorado, Monte Walsh(both), The Shootist, and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Shane
The Magnificent Seven
The Wild Bunch
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

So many to choose from, but those are my Top 5.

In no particular order:
The Ox-bow Incident
The Shootist
The Searchers

The problem is there are 5 to 10 others I could name that I like just as much.

CW

Lonesome Dove
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Fort Appache
High Noon
Open Range
McClintock
Big Jake
Reo Bravo
The Sons of Katey Elder

Yea, I know you only asked for 5.

LTC

1. Hondo
2. Lonesome Dove
3. The Searchers
4. Dances with Wolves
5. McClintock
6. Cheyenne Social Club....couldn't leave it out!

Gotta love Jimmy Stewart in that one........:)-----#6 for those that may not have seen it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm I don't think I can limit it to just 5 but---

The Cowboys- the boys passage to manhood
Big Jake- integrity and honor
Lonesome Dove- the epic western frontier spirit
Rio Grande- A truely western frontier love story
Conagher- Integrity, family life in the west
Last Stand At Saber River- Rebuilding a family after the civil war- true grit
True Grit- a bravado western at its best
Cross Fire Trail- Honor and virtrue
Monte Walsh-(Tom Selleck version) A cowboys last hurrah at the close of the frontier era.
Springfield Rifle- The dedication of a man to what is right

OK it is more than 5 but I have a dozen more I like.

John

Not in any order:

Stagecoach (the John Wayne version).
High Noon.
Shane.
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.
Rooster Cogburn.
Treasure of Sierra Madre.

For a Few Dollars More
Magnificent Seven
The Palamino (Brando, I don't even remember the new one)
The Quick and the Dead
True Grit (Wayne and Cambel, but the new one was good also)

Honorable Mentions:Siverado, Unforgiven, Hombre, and the new 3:10 to Yuma, I could go on for days, but I'm sure everyone else could, too.

Pick five top Westerns? Good luck. Tougher than picking one knife. But here goes. Just don't compare my picks with my picks from the last time we did this:

Rancho Deluxe
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Unforgiven
True Grit

Now, if you rule out Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges, that opens the field considerably.

Once Upon a Time in the West
One Eyed Jacks
Legends of the Fall
Lonesome Dove
The Wild Bunch

As I look back, I see I have nothing with John Wayne, nothing based on an Elmore Leonard western, and I have left out The Professionals and The Sheepman. Something's wrong here.

Pat Garret & Billy the Kid
The Long Riders

The Wild Bunch
tommorow would be a different five too many to choose from

Most anything by John Wayne, but two more I haven't seen listed. Glen Ford in "The Fastest Gun Alive." Also Charlton Heston in "Arrowhead."
