So I found a fellow that wants to trade me even up for my mint Shield 9mm w/2 8 round mags for a mint Springfield XD-40, with the case, 2 mags, holster and mag holder kit. I will still have my Ruger Sr40c for carry, a Taurus PT111 G2 and my M&P Compact 22LR pistols. I am just thinking that it might be nice to have a full size pistol again.

Thoughts? Is the XD 40 a good gun?

Thanks!

I think XD's are fine pistols (I have two), but I don't really care for .40s. Since you already have a Ruger SR40c, and if you don't want the Shield anymore, I'd find a full size Ruger SR40 and go for that. I assume the mags are usable in the compact version also?

For range use it will be fine, if you wanted a gun that you might carry or use for HD I would go for a Glock/M&P/Sig/HK over the XD. I don't have any experience with the XD personally but I know it is not very highly regarded, I would do more research into all the issues that people claim to have with the XDs before I traded a perfectly good Shield for one.

Imo you cant go wrong with an xd 40. See if your friend will let you shoot it before you trade it. But if I were you I'd hang on to the shield and find an xd for a good price. I have sold/traded my guns in the past and I regret doing so.

That's my dilemma, I do like my Shield....a lot!! :) I just keep thinking do I need the Ruger SR40C and the Shield?? I know the Shield is easier to conceal but I shoot the Ruger so much better! I am low and too the left on the Shield, but I have not tried the finger placement on the trigger trick, so it may have been because I was holding it incorrectly. I am definitely thinking that I would miss the Shield, but still I can't convince myself 100% that I need to have both guns that can be used for the same thing!

I have shot a few XD series pistols and they are "okay". A buddy carried one for a few years and had no issues with it. The one thing I can't get past is where it says "Made in Croatia" on the side. I am a huge supporter of products Made in USA, and all of the firearms I own are such.

The Shield takes more initial practice to shoot well than a FS pistol, IMO. But once you get comfortable with it, it will be as accurate and comfortable as any other pistol you shoot well. I'm no expert, by any means; but my Shields are every bit as accurate at SD ranges as any of my FS pistols. So if you already think you'll miss the Shield once you trade it off, I would just keep the Shield and pick up whatever you might be interested in later.

I am not a huge fan of Ruger SR series pistols as they are cheap and quality control a problem. The Springfield's are very well made but the high bore axis along with lots of creep make it a no go for me. I do have the MOD2 in 3 and 4 inch and not crazy about trigger but shoot them both very accurately. The Shield is very crisp although not light as my Walther PPQ which is by far best striker fired

Keep your Shield and add an XD......The XD is a very well made and thought out sidearm. I use an XD Tactical in USPSA Limited 10 frequently and after over 30,000 rounds, I finally broke a striker block. Springfield Armory sent me a current version....NO CHARGE.

The trigger on the 4 XD's I own are very good....never had any creep, and broke cleanly even though it is a slightly firm trigger it is consistent.

Add to the herd in my humble opinion!

Randy

PS. I got over the Made in Croatia a long time ago. There are plenty of made in the USA handguns in the herd as well.

The XD is not highly regarded? By whom and for what reasons?

The XD's I own have been near flawless. And one of them has well over 30,000 rounds downrange in USPSA matches. The XD is a very solid handgun in ALL regards.

I had an XDS-45 ACP and it was a solid gun! It was a snappy little ***, but it was well made so I don't have any doubts of the Springfield guns being quality peices and wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I decided that since there is the voice in my head that is not really sure, I am not going to do the trade. I am going to just keep it and the Ruger SR40C and change them up when I feel like it. I will just buy a full size handgun down the road.

I too have sold guns in the past and have regretted it! :(

Thanks all for your feedback!!

I have an xd40 that I use for CC without any problems (concealability or reliability) My wife has a ruger sr40c also without any issues, I personally don't like the ruger because of the manual safety but she loves it.The main issue would be to ask yourself is the xd40 to be used as a cc gun and how you will be carrying it or is a home defense gun.
