Tornado's In Springfield, MA

Watching the news right now, sounds like more than a few tornadoes touched down around Springfield and other cities and towns. emergency services are responding and assessing damages. Some buildings look to have been hit pretty hard. Hospitals treating victims, no confirmation of deaths as of now. Tornadoes may still be forming. Time will tell how bad it really is going to be...........

In south springfield, mass. It was 10miles tall just like the one in the midwest. This doesn't sound good on the news so far. Its on the net already with pics.

You have a few days maybe to buy your S&W's(kidding) the'll be ok i'm sure. Bill

Tornado's in Springfield, MA

I hope S&W is okay. I sent a Model 17 that I have owned for 34 years back for work and it arrived there this morning. Yikes!

I guess I can give ya a pretty on the scene report. It was pretty unbelieveable as one formed pretty much in Agawam, across the river from Springfield. I was about a mile from my shop when it hit. As I crossed the bridge around the corner from my shop, I saw tree limbs all over the bridge.. there are no trees on the bridge... I looked down by the river and noticed a grove of tree tops missing.. that was the second sign something was wrong. I had actually just left my LGS because the owners wife just called to tell him she was in downtown Springfield and a hail storm had just hit, so I decided to go back to my shop.. about the time I saw the tree limbs, my cell phone rang, it was my wife, she was home and heard something happened, as I was telling her about the tree limbs I crossed the bridge and turned left to the street around the corner from my shop and all I could say was OMG... trees, biiiig trees were snapped in half, pulled out of the ground, all over the place, power lines down ev erywhere... I was stunned, all I could keep saying was OMG....I worked my way through the 1\4 mile to my shop through the debree, it was just insane, people were coming out of their homes and a few businesses and just looked stunned.. I got to my shop holding my breath, my son and grand daughter were on the side of the road as was my other employee.. everything looked ok, cars were all there, but trees on the side and back of the shop leading to the river were broken, down and just plain gone.. lots of biiig old trees in the neighbor hood... Ok, I felt better, my son said he could see the storm just come dome the hill as the winds began blowing, he closed the 3 bay doors.. said it was instantly crazy as whatever you call it, winds, tornado.. whatever seemed to bounce over the shop taking many trees and limbs down behind and beside our building..

We then rode through the neighborhood, into West Springfield, it's a mess, much worse damage in West Springfield, over another river and into downtown Springfield, which is just a mess as well. We saw several buildings with the roofs gone and much structural damage... not good, but the damage, I believe is nowhere near what happened out west... I have pictures, I'll try to post a few..

oh ya.... I'm pretty sure S&W is just fine...

Here's a link to my photos slideshow.. It's basically pics around my shop and just the least damaged areas. We didn't get to the really badly damaged areas.. I do believe that the first reported fatality was located on the other side of the railroad overpass in the 4 or 5th picture. A tree fell on a motorist there.

Any issues at the Sprinfield office?

My HQ is in Springfield, MA, in the Agawam area, and there was
some serious weather issues thereabouts today.

Any effect on the fine folks at the Smith and Wesson offices?

I sure hope not.

Just checking...

Tornado

Did the Smith&Wesson factory suffer any damage in the tornado?

Having lived and worked in the Springfield area for many years and knowing the description of where the tornado crossed the Connecticut River I would say that the S&W plant was probably spared. The plant is in the NE corner of Springfield and the tornado was a bit southwest of there.

Did that tornado in Springfield Mass damage...

the Smith & Wesson plant?

I have been to the factory many times and it is built like a war materials factory. Most is poured reinforced concrete, it has a built in bomb shelter etc...

I doubt it would suffer huge damage like a stick built building.
