Trade a S&W for a Taurus???

I was at the range today, had finished up shooting and was just sitting around shooting the breeze with another guy. We were approached by another customer (neither of us knew him), who wanted our opinion of Taurus. There was a nearly new Taurus .357 (not sure of the model, but is a close clone of a M66) for $350. I don't know much about Taurus, but their reputation has not been stellar, especially with customer service.

He was planning on trading in a M10. I recommended keeping the M10, but he wanted new and shiny.

I tried to do a good deed today. Oh well.

The new Taurus models are fairly decent guns, and I would purchase one if they did away with their hammer lock on their larger revolvers, but I definitely wouldn't trade a Model 10 for one.

I would agree that you were right to tell him keep the m10. I've heard from some that Taurus revolvers are great, and from others that they have timing issues. If the QC on their semi autos is any indication, they may get a gun that never has any issues, but they may also get a lemon. The odds seem to be about the same. I've never owned a Taurus revolver, but I have owned one of their semi autos, as did my sister. Mine was perfect as long as you fed it brass. Hers never went fully into battery.

I hear about more issues with S&W revolvers than Taurus. You'll probably find more things wrong with a NIB $900-$1200 S&W revolver than a $350 Taurus despite "conventional wisdom."

I don't have any experience with Taurus revolvers. My only Taurus handgun is a PT1911 which has been a solid performer.

That would have been the correct play. I don't think he had it with him, but he described it as an older well used duty weapon. Sounds like it was well-loved.

See the above post, AlHunt. They all do the same thing. Taurus has been around for over 80 years. People who owned one that they had a problem with many moons ago will, ad nauseam, bash them every chance they get for decades as if the models they had issues with so long ago haven't been discontinued for years, the management and employees who were involved aren't long gone from the company or even dead, and that Taurus doesn't have new management, machines, employees, product lines, and reputation.

After owning 2 taurus products that both broke internal parts after very little shooting and selling them both at a loss I'll never own anymore Taurus ****. Smiths for me all the way.

Mike, for example, had a bad experiences over 15 years ago. The Taurus of over 15 years ago is only the same by name. Still, even if Mike lives 100 more years, he'll still have hold the same grudge.

My Shield 45acp RSA broke into peices after one 2 or 3 mags first range visits. It was a paperweight until I received another in the snail mail. This and other forums and YouTube are filled with several dozen of post from S&W semiauto and revolver owners who have had premature parts breakage, QC issues, and reliability issues out the both with their examples. It happens with all manufacturers, but S&W gets millions of passes when they're one of the worst offenders.

I had a 629 5” Classic and a 69 4.25”. I wanted a 4” full underlug ported 4” which S&W doesn’t make. I bought a Taurus M44 and after 1000 rounds I’m very pleased with the quality.

Taurus doesn’t sell spare parts. Nobody bothers to make replacement spare parts for Taurus.
If your Taurus breaks or needs service, you gotta send it back to them.
Maybe they fix it, maybe they don’t!
Sometimes they can’t.
Sometimes they don’t have the parts.
A gunsmith could fix it, but he doesn’t have the parts either. Besides, he’ll probably tell you he won’t even touch a Taurus.

And, it's too late then!

and if you live on the West coast, like me, it takes a while to get the gun back
and getting them on the phone , is not easy, at least for me.

ED: And I always thought it was only the PAC 12 (R.I.P.) that thought Reno, NV, and other points even FURTHER East (like Boulder, SLC & LA?) were "on the West coast"...?.

I've owned a number of Taurus revolvers over the years. I had a couple especially, a Model 66, and a 65 (Think Model 19 and 13) that I might would have swapped a Model 10 for. They were made in the 90's I suppose, had beautiful blue finishes. Never had a problem with them, but then I freely admit that I tend to not keep guns long no matter who made them. I'm one who's always wanting to try something different, so they all get shuffled along sooner or later.
