I'm trying to sell a Remington 870 and a guy offered me a model 10 4". I don't know much about it, other than a couple pictures he sent me. I'm asking $300 obo for the 870 and his model 10 has definitely had its finish worn off. I don't know what year the smith was made in, but it has a pinned barrel and a square butt. From what I could see in the picture it looked as though the serial number was etched into the bottom of the frame's grip. I think it reads "D14759X" (X=a marking I couldn't read). Anybody know how old this revolver is? Any issues from that year? Overall would this be a fair trade? Thank you for all information in advance!

Hi, this model 10 is a 1969 production gun. There are no issues specific to that year of manufacture. If your 870 is really worth $300, I would say you should be able to find a nicer model 10 or another Smith revolver in that price range. Shooter-grade model 10s as described are common at $200.

I agree with Alan about the model 10 price. I also have to add that model 870's can be had for less than $300 around here, so it is really relative. I used to think any S&W regardless of condition was easily worth $200 as long as it was all there and functioned. That figure may be low in today's world or rising S&W prices. There are a gazillion model 10 police trade ins and many are in well worn shape.

All that said, you obviously no longer need or want the 870 so it really boils down to how much do you really want the model 10. Either way, it's a toss up in my mind. If the price difference concerns you, tell the other party that you need some cash with the model 10, like maybe $50. See what he says or maybe a couple boxes of ammo or a holster to sweeten the pot. Good luck.

The prices have come down since the post election surge but around here unless the model 10 is a total beater it would sell for $250 if it locks up tight and has decent grips on it and I agree that you would be hard pressed to get $300 for a used Remington 870 here.

Thank you all for the great and quick information. I knew I listed it a little high but expected somewhere around 250 for the 870. I know there's better pistols out there for that price (J&G model 64s come to mind), but figured I'd ask since I'm ignorant to the value of it. Also, would I be able to take that revolver to the range and carry it regularly? Should I be concerned about it's age and being able to withstand being shot on a consistent basis? Would it handle +P loads? Thank you.

You would have to run a lot of .38's through a Model 10 to wear it out. I would hold out for the cash and put it towards another handgun if that's what you want, there's still some decent S&W's in the $250 price range.

What model is the 870? A Wingmaster would be worth more than an Express. The model 10 for the Remington? I doubt it. You have not handled the 10 yet, for all you know the barrel could be pitted, or full of lead in the rifling, out of time or any of a number of different problems. Handle the 10 before you let the Remington go if you are seriously considering his offer.

For what its worth, J&G now has a sale on their used Model 64's - they're now under $200.00. The Model 64 is the stainless version of the Model 10 heavy barrel.

Best of luck,

Dave
