I usually only trade a Smith for another Smith. I have been a purist for some years now ,and My Smith and Wesson collection takes precedence over any other passions.

I saw this Rossi Puma in 45 Colt at a local range, and to make a long story really short, traded a 4" nickel model 10-6 in 90% condition and $200. cash for this carbine.

Now I have something to shoot when I take my 25-5 to the range.

Everyone I've shown it to has an opinion. They either love it or hate it.

I'd like your honest, unbiased opinions on the carving work on the stock and fore grip.

I'll post a range and function report after firing it this weekend.

Thanks in advance ,,,,Al

Since I fancy myself a wood carver the carving is excellent. Can't say I've ever seen that elaborate a carving on a gun I like it. It's not for everyone but for me it involves two things that I like very much. Good for you!! Larry

The carving is extremely well done.

I like the basketweave on the left side and the picture of Sitting Bull better than the other side.

It would make a beautiful display gun, but I don't know how comfortable it would be to shoot.

I think its cool carving.....not sure I would have traded but if made you happy than all is good

Not my cup of tea, I would have preferred a consistent or related theme over both sides front & back. Either foliage or basket weave, or Indian...

It does seem pretty deep too, which may lend itself to damaged edges & more probability of snagging. It's pretty & interesting, just not very practical to me. Looks like someone put alot of time into it.

My brother had some custom checkering done on a rifle of his... it wasn't appreciated when he went to sell it.

I would have done the same thing and I wouldnt change a thing as far as the carving goes!

The carving doesn't look bad, but the total effect looks "Unfinished" to me with the old stain left on the uncarved portions. I would remove the old finish and the re-finish the rifle in a light colored stain or oil.

Just my opinion, how does it shoot?

Not my cup of tea, but if you like it, the trade was good. It's not like you'll never see another M10-6.

A reliable carbine (assuming this one is) in .45 Colt could be very useful as well as being a lot of fun.

You axed for an honest opinion:
I'm in the "hate it" camp.

But, if you like it, that's what matters.

The gun is fine but the wood for me is... "different". I've purchased rifles with good metal and so-so wood so I can't comment except that it appears nicely done. It does have an "unfinished" look with all the different shadings. If I were to purchase this, I would have it done in a uniform color. It appears a lot more "grippy" than checkering! I would check the previous owner of this for hidden pocket knives if he were to come over to view my S&Ws. Wouldn't take any chances on his deciding to "fix" some "cokes" on my pistols!

Sir, I wouldn't quite say "hate," but if that were my gun, I'd be shopping for new wood.

As for the gun itself, I used to have one very similar to yours and rather liked it. Mine was a pre-lock Puma .45 with a half-round 24-inch tube. It held "minute of pop can" out to about 65 yards and had almost no noise or recoil, even with "Ruger only" loads. Kinda like to get another, but with a shorter barrel.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.
