making movies in the old days could be fatal. one lost to a rhino and another lost to a croc. the camera man had to be pretty much fearless or didn't know any better to be scared

I think I saw the 1973 version with Rod Taylor sometime decades ago.

So on the 1931 film, they had two fatalities, plus the female lead catching a tropical disease that took her out for years. Add to that the stuff about the second unit filming in Mexico so they could legally torture animals.

And then the new version was entirely filmed on the MGM backlot in Culver City and spiffed up with colorized footage from the 1931 film and two other 1950s Africa movies.

What a mess.

I believe many of the animal scenes were recycled for the first two Tarzan films where the critters were upstaged by Maureen O'Sullivan en dishabille.
