I just talked to IMR about using Trail Boss in my 460 S&W mag with 300 gr Hornady and Speer bullets. The advice I was given was to start at 70% below the bullet's seated depth and work right up to the seated depth WITHOUT compressing the powder.

It seems reasonable. Just passing along info.

Got the same information from the same source when asking about loading for the 500S&W Mag.

"Mark the case where the bottom of the bullet will end up and put that much Trail Boss in. You will be good to go!"

I took his word for it and it worked well.

Real nice shooting out of the Handi-Rifle I had at the time.

What kind of performance are you looking to get out of Trail Boss powder? I am looking for a good target load for my son to shoot. He dosn't like my loads much.

I loaded a few 250 gr XTP's with 14.5 gr Trail boss. Nice load. You get a little push straight back with very little muzzel flip. I let a buddy of mine with no handgun experience shoot a few, and he did fine. Then he shot TWO full pressure rounds, and he didn't want any more.

Not sure of velocity. 4" groups at 50 yds were about as good as I could shoot. But that's about as good as I have been able to do with any 250-300 gr load.

I have a couple of hundred 300 gr Speer bullets, so I'll shoot a few of these with the Trail boss. 12.5 grains left about 1/8" or more under the seated bullet. That's about what I measured with 14.5 grains under the 250gr XTP give or take a little.

Come to think of it, a 300 gr bullet at 1000 fps (just guessing) will hammer down anything in my part of the world at 50 yds.

I am using 14 gr. of TB for both 250 XTP and Gold Dot. Have not "wasted" any 300 grainers yet with it. I love it for the low power loads...getting about 900 fps. I've settled on TB for low power and 2400 for medium and factory loads for the "real thing".

There is a great article on the XVR in American Rifleman........the things were designed to shoot 1 MOA ! No wonder mine is so damn accurate!
