At FLETC as a brand new pistol shooter I got rather good rather quickly. Just came easy to me and was fun doing something I had never done. Consistently shot 300’s on facing targets, timed, and with reloads when YOU chose. Was shooting a Model 10 heavy barrel. Yes, speedloaders really helped.
Sooooooo…one day a US Secret Service instructor approached and said: ‘You’re pretty good. Want to shoot ties to see how good?’ No idea what he meant but said ‘sure.’
Nothing wagered but my entire class and the range staff gathered.
‘Ties’ meant only shots on the tie of the target counted. (It was the then standard silhouette of a man wearing a coat and tie.)
I was humiliated…to say the least. Glad there wasn’t a wager!
Learned that tight groups are the sign of a truly good shooter.
That said, what Faulkner did is what a truly GREAT shooter can do. Wow!
