Hope this is in the right forum.

I plan on vacationing in Florida visiting some family this summer .. While there can I buy a pistol from an individual or a gun store though I live in a state other then Florida ? or do I have to have a Florida address ??

Would having a non-resident CCL from Florida make any difference?

Any information would be appreciated or where the info might be found ..

Unless you are going to leave it in Florida I'm pretty sure it needs to be transferred to you through an FFL in your state for it to be legal.

A person who does not have a Federal Firearms License cannot buy a handgun out of the state of his residency and take it with him. He can buy it and have it shipped to a licensed dealer in his state where he will get the required background check and take delivery from the dealer. Our great media just loves to make it seem like you can purchase through the mail and all sorts of neat stuff without background checks. 'Taint so.

Thanks everyone for the quick answers !! That was my understanding also .. That I could buy one but it had to be transferred to my local FFL for me to take procession of it ..

Whitwabit - before you go on your Florida trip, go to your friendly/local Illinois FFL Dealer and get his business card and/or copy of FFL license and a fax number.
Being prepared when you find a gun in Florida (to furnish the FFL Dealer with the ILL. info) will make the transfer smooth and easy. Not all FFL dealers will give you a "copy" of their license, but some will.

Adding to above statement: make sure your ILL. FFL will receive a shipment from a non-FFL dealer in FL.
Be cautious of dealing with private individual in FL. as you will have problem tracking down gun and your money if it doesn't make it to ILL.

must have a Florida drivers licence .

Must be a Florida Resident.

There is no requirement to have a drivers license. While that is the thing most people use to prove residency, you could also use a Florida ID card (for those that do not drive), and other things could work. In yesterday's mail I got my homestead-exemption paperwork for this year. I'm sure that would prove I was a resident, since it shows I have a homestead in Florida.

But, but, but . . . I thought zillions of criminals were using the 'gun show loophole' to purchase out of state. Couldn't he just go to a gun show and do what the President says people are currently already doing legally? If not, what's the big deal about closing the loophole?

But then, we'd have two more criminals. Granted, there's that pesky question of enforcement, but on the whole, I'd rather do the FFL transfer...even if it's to Illinois.

Thanks for all the replies .. They have been very helpful .. Thank You !!

Florida is a much friendlier gun state then the state I live in ( Illinois )thus the out of state gun shopping !!

I will probably buy from a gun store if I do buy anything or a least somewhere that is reputable to insure I do get my weapon should I buy one .. both of my nephews who live there in different areas are gun people and plan on them helping me by steering me to the right places ..

looking for a shiny S&W in 40 TSW between 91 and 2002 .. and really want to have it in my hands and see it with my eye before deciding to buy ..

I know I could buy through one of the auction houses but it goes back to wanting to feel the gun in my hands before finally deciding .. Its a want that doesn't have to be filled and only will be if I find something I really want .. other wise I keep looking .. not in a hurry !!

I am interested primarily in older guns, and have found that a C&R license will almost always allow me to purchase a firearm that falls under the criteria (over 50 years old). The only time I have run into a problem was at a gun show in Wisconsin, where the FFL dealers would honor a C&R but the private parties would not. At this show, there were private parties with many eligible guns, but none would sell out of state.
