Tried out a couple of rentals at the range today. I've previously owned a late model Shield 1.0 and a couple of other M&P 2.0's and have a fair amount of familiarity with the old trigger design and how it feels. I've seen reviews of the Shield Plus and heard good things about the new trigger.

However, I was really surprised when I shot it today. The trigger felt soft and light without much of a discernible break. I would almost describe it as a surprise break.

The reset was vague at best and I missed it several times. Just couldn't feel it and was guessing. I spent some time dry firing to try and figure it out, but I still missed the reset when I went back to live fire.

I don't think this was a worn out rental gun as it was still very tight. It only wanted to accept a full mag with the slide locked back and the slide stop didn't give at all when I attempted to thumb it into battery (Yes, I know it's not designed for that but well broken in pistols may go into battery).

In any event, the Shield Plus was extremely accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I'm sure with more range time I would figure out the trigger.

Just sharing my experience and wondering if others feel the same about the trigger or if perhaps this particular pistol was an anomaly.

Thx for sharing and good observation.
I don't remember if I shot Gen1 Shield (probably long time ago as rental gun) so I cannot compare to that one.
I love the M2.0 series, trigger feels good, but the hinged shape drives me crazy.
Plus' trigger is what should be done already in M2.0. The trigger is much better and actually reset feels good.

Each of us has different sense of touch, plus you still remember trigger feel from other models. Or it's just because of rental item?

Anyway... Shield Plus trigger is great. It is still not as good as APEX trigger in other M&Ps.. but good enough for me to accept it and shoot the handgun without any trigger job.

I was shooting the Shield Plus along side of a Gen 5 Glock 17 and a Glock 43X. The Glock triggers were almost identical and completely predictable.

While the S&W trigger was definitely "lighter", it was not predictable with a defined wall. Accuracy was very similar between the 17, 43X, and Shield Plus at self defense ranges (6-10yards).

I have a Shield Plus and love the trigger. A little bit of takeup, a definite wall and a sharp break.

If that's the norm, then there was something wrong with the rental gun's trigger. But, as I mentioned, everything else was tight.

How is the reset on your Shield Plus?

I would definitely try a different Shield Plus. I’ll bet you find the trigger to your liking. That gun shop version is not what is intended or common for this gun.

I hope Smith extends the improved Shield Plus type trigger to the entire MP line. Should you ever use your pistol in self defense, sleazy lawyers may attempt look into any trigger work you did. If you installed a race trigger, they will try to use that against you in a court of law.

Best to choose carry guns that have a stock trigger you already like. "No Sir, your Honor, that gun is just as I bought it."

I just got a Shield Plus over a month ago. It’s my first M&P and first Shield, so I can’t compare it to the other models. However, the trigger on mine is great. It’s hard to describe in words, but I find it lighter than my stock Glock 34 Gen 4, but not as light as my Colt Competition 1911. Unlike my SW 3913 that has little to no discernible wall in single action mode (it’s DA/SA), my Shield Plus has a very discernible wall. It’s not gritty or mushy. My Glock 34 is slightly gritty and mushy by comparison. The reset has a nice, slightly audible click. The accuracy on mine is on par with my Colt Competition 1911 from 5 to 15 yards with tight groups. Like the others have said, I would try a different Shield Plus.
