What is the average single action trigger pull weight on a S&W double action revolver.

I would say the range varies from 2 3/4 to 4 pounds. I've seen them less than the 2 3/4 and more than the 4, but the SA pull on Smiths is usually excellent. If I had to pick an AVERAGE NUMBER I'd have to say 3 1/4 pounds.

Mine run 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 pounds, without any spring or trigger work, and the tension spring screw all the way in and tight. However, SA in a revolver is very crisp with little over travel. SA pistols, on the other hand, tend to have a lot of creep. My SA Vaquero, on the other hand, breaks at a crisp 3-1/2 pounds. It's impossible to judge unless you have a trigger pull scale.

According to my armorers manual, the gun (K-frame) should hold 3lbs, and break above that threshold.....between 3-5 lbs. (I wrote in the margin of the manual that this was raised in 1986 to 3lbs, from the previous req of 2.5 lbs) "Target" models are listed at between 3-4.5 lbs, and the N frames are listed at 3-4lbs. Keep in mind this is "dated" info.....my books and I are both OLD......but I don't think the pull ratings have changed much over the years.
I'm sure one the the current certified S&W revolver armorers on our forum has current info.....how about it guys, has it changed?

Every recent S&W I've purchase in the past 5 years has had a single action break of 4 pounds give or take 2 ounces once they had been shot a bit. Out of the box brand spanking new they broke at 4 1/2 pounds.

Since I purchased a Lyman Digital trigger gage and learned how to tune a S&W revolver all of my revolvers have a single action trigger that breaks a whisker over 3 lbs. On my guns achieving that was so easy it's almost laughable, all I did was install a 14 lbs. rebound spring.

Thanks for the replies. My 586 and 617 are around 4-4.5 lbs. My 29 Classic is 3-3.5 measured. They seem alot lighter when shooting them.
